In recent years, some pharmacies in the country have also focused solely on veterinary medications and started stocking various preparations in their pharmacies.

Unfortunately, in our country, there are insufficient studies that could serve as a resource for preparing extemporaneous formulations in pharmacies for use in veterinary medicine.

To return to our formula;

Coal Tar Topical Solution USP 15 ml

Lanolin USP                                      30 g

Resorcinol USP                                 10 g

Liquefiled Phenol USP                       7 ml

Hydrophilic Petrolatum U                 60 g

White Petrolatum USP qs 454 g

Substances included in the formula:

Coal Tar- Goudron de Houille- Coal tar- Pix Carbonis- Pix Lithanthracis- Steinkohlenteer;

It is prepared by the dry distillation of coal. It has a naphthalene-like odor and a burning taste. It is a dense liquid nearly black in color. It hardens upon contact with air. It is slightly soluble in water. While soluble in chloroform and benzene, it is partially soluble in alcohol and ether. Its density gradually increases under the effect of air. It burns with a bright, sooty flame. Its saturated solution gives an alkaline reaction to litmus. Coal tar is included in the composition of medicated shampoos, soaps, and ointments used to treat dandruff and psoriasis, as well as to kill and eradicate head lice. Soluble extracts (2%) prepared by the dry distillation of coal tar are also used in the treatment of dandruff. Tars and tar oils reduce the thickness of the epidermis. They are antipruritic and exhibit a weak antiseptic effect. Topically, they are used in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and other skin diseases. Coal tar preparations have largely been replaced by wood tars. Ultraviolet light increases the efficacy of coal tar in the treatment of psoriasis. Some wood tars are included in the composition of expectorant preparations. Tar has also been used in homeopathic medicine.

Lanoline-Graisse de laine-Adeps lanae-Refined wool fat-Lanae cera-Lanoleine T.K.

It is obtained from sheep’s wool. It is light yellow in color and has an ointment consistency. It dissolves in ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and boiling absolute alcohol. It absorbs twice its weight in water. It is an emulsifier. It forms water/oil emulsions. In anhydrous form, its consistency is quite firm. Upon the addition of water, a dough-like texture is formed. It absorbs water by its weight. It is easily absorbed by the skin and is odorless. It is used as an ointment base.

The base included under the name lanolinum in the Turkish Pharmacopoeia (T.K.) contains 13 parts Lanolin, 3 parts Liquid Paraffin, and 4 parts Water.

Dibromsalicylii-Resorcine-Dioksibenzol-Resorcinol;

It is a white crystalline substance with a characteristic odor. Its color turns red under the influence of air and light. It has an acrid taste. It is soluble in 1 part water and 1 part alcohol, as well as in ether, glycerin, and benzene, but insoluble in chloroform. It is incompatible with acetanilide, camphor, chloral hydrate, menthol, and phenol. Resorcinol is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. Externally (ointment 10-20%, solution 0.1%), it is used in psoriasis, acne, seborrhea, eczema, and other skin diseases. Application to very large surface areas should be avoided. The maximum single dose (M.D.) is 0.50-1.5 g.

Phenic acid- Phenyl alcohol- Acid carbolique- Phenolum:

Phenol occurs as colorless, light pink, or pale yellow, hygroscopic, pointed crystals or crystalline masses that darken upon standing and have a characteristic odor. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) permits the addition of a suitable stabilizing agent. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): It is soluble 1:15 in water and 1:70 in liquid paraffin; freely soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether, glycerol, and volatile oils. A solution of 1 g of phenol in water is clear and neutral or acidic to litmus. It is incompatible with alkali salts and non-ionic surfactants. Phenol is one of the oldest antiseptic-disinfectants. Nowadays, it is rarely used as an antiseptic. It also exhibits local anesthetic and analgesic effects. It is included in the composition of preparations used as topical analgesics for toothache. In combination with benzocaine and ethanol, it is applied topically for toothache, aphthous ulcers (it has not been found safe alone in the treatment of aphthous ulcers), herpes labialis, minor dental surgery procedures, and mild abrasions and irritations caused by dentures and fillings on the mouth and gums. Its 0.5%-1% solutions are used against itching. Camphorated phenol is a local anesthetic preparation containing phenol, camphor, and liquid paraffin, used against toothache. Phenol, in combination with camphor, is effective against mild pain and itching observed in insect bites, minor burns including sunburn, minor skin abrasions, and other skin irritations. Low-concentration solutions are also used for topical disinfection. Its 5% solution has been used in the disinfection of body secretions. Oily phenol solutions (Oily Phenol Injection, BP 1993) are used as an analgesic sclerosing agent for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. For this purpose, it is injected into the tissue surrounding internal hemorrhoids. Its aqueous solutions are utilized as sclerosing agents in the treatment of hydrocele. Phenol has been used as a neurolytic in 3-4% solutions.

CAUTION! Phenol is a severely corrosive poison when taken internally. It must never be swallowed. It can cause systemic toxicity by being absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes. In this regard, appropriate precautions should be taken to prevent absorption. Absorption of phenol vapors through the skin and lungs can also cause systemic toxicity. It exhibits antiseptic and disinfectant activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, and certain fungi. Its effect against spores is very slow and insufficient. It is also effective against certain viruses. Its activity increases in acidic solutions. Aqueous solutions up to 1% concentration exhibit bacteriostatic effects, while more concentrated solutions exhibit bactericidal effects. Phenol exerts its effect by increasing the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria and fungi. Phenol is applied topically only.

Hydrophilic Petrolatum USP- Yellow petrolatum- Soft yellow paraffin- Vaselinum flavum- Vaselinum flavum ;

Contains cholesterol, stearyl alcohol, and white beeswax. It is an anhydrous, absorbent, and good emollient with water-absorbing capacity.

White petrolatum– Paraffinum album– Vaseline- Vaseline blanche- White soft paraffin;

Petrolatum is used as an excipient in pharmaceutical preparations in Pharmacy.

Known as white petrolatum, it is an emollient ointment base. Petrolatum is applied topically to the skin. It is not easily absorbed through the skin. It exhibits a moisturizing effect on the skin. Thus, it helps revitalize the skin. It is obtained by bleaching yellow petrolatum. It is odorless and tasteless. Petrolatum (white soft paraffin) is obtained by bleaching soft yellow paraffin. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), a suitable stabilizer may be added to its composition.

Preparation of the formula

The quantity of each substance in the formula is carefully calculated. Resorcinol is gradually added into the coal tar and mixed. To this, approximately 10 g of hydrophilic petrolatum, lanolin, and the remaining hydrophilic petrolatum are added respectively. The calculated liquefied phenol and then a sufficient amount of white petrolatum are added and triturated in a glass mortar until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.

In memory of Cesur and Herkül …

Wishing you a good week…

Source:

Allen’s Compounded Formulations.

American Pharmaceutical Association Washington, D.C.

Exp.
