{"id":8685,"date":"2026-08-11T11:18:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T11:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/majistraleczacilari.org.tr\/?post_type=docs&#038;p=3331"},"modified":"2026-08-21T12:36:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T12:36:02","password":"","slug":"glycerin-iodine-in-ent-diseases-and-veterinary-medicine","status":"publish","type":"docs","link":"https:\/\/majistraleczacilari.org.tr\/en\/dokumanlar\/veterinary-formulas\/glycerin-iodine-in-ent-diseases-and-veterinary-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Glycerin Iodine in ENT Diseases and Veterinary Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/eczacininsesi.com\/haber\/gliserin_iode1.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/strong>Dear Colleagues, this week we will present formulas containing Glycerin\u2014a colorless, syrupy, hygroscopic substance that, due to being an extremely viscous liquid, can sometimes be mistakenly identified as an oily substance\u2014which is also used in veterinary medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Let us recall that this formula<strong>Collutoria &#8211; Collutory &#8211; Collutoires<\/strong>is of this nature, that is, liquid and semi-liquid preparations formulated to be applied to the gums and oral mucosa.<strong>IODINE COLLUTORY Ph.Helv.VI 1977<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Colutorium Iodatum-Solutio Iodi Glycerolata<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Glycerine Iod\u00e9)<\/strong>Rp<\/p>\n<p>Iodine                  2 g<\/p>\n<p>Potassium iodide    4 g<\/p>\n<p>Glycerin (85%)     90 g<\/p>\n<p>Peppermint water            4 g<strong>Preparation<\/strong>Iodine and potassium iodide are thoroughly triturated with peppermint water in a glass mortar, and glycerin is added gradually while mixing.<strong>Glyc\u00e9r\u00e9 a I\u2019iode, Glyc\u00e9rine iod\u00e9e<\/strong>Rp<\/p>\n<p>Tein.d\u2019iode   15 g<\/p>\n<p>Glycerin         35 g<strong>Mandl&#8217;s Paint \u2013 (Martindale 29th ed.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/eczacininsesi.com\/haber\/tenturdio.jpg\" alt=\"\">Rp<\/p>\n<p>Iodine                          1.25 g<\/p>\n<p>Potassium iodide       2.5 g<\/p>\n<p>Purified water              2.50 ml<\/p>\n<p>Peppermint oil           0.40 ml<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol (90%)              4.00 ml<\/p>\n<p>Glycerin q.s.        100.00 ml<strong>Preparation<\/strong>Iodine and potassium iodide are dissolved in water. 50 ml of glycerin and peppermint oil are added, and the mixture is made up to 100 ml with glycerin.<strong>Substances used in the formula<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Glycerol &#8211; Glycerine &#8211; Glycerolum &#8211; Glycerol (85%):<\/strong>Glycerin is a clear, colorless or very pale, hygroscopic, syrupy liquid that is odorless or has a very slight odor and a sweet taste. It is miscible with water and alcohol; slightly soluble in acetone; and practically insoluble in chloroform, ether, fixed oils, and essential oils. Its aqueous solutions give a neutral reaction to litmus. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the pH of Glycerin Oral Solution, USP is between 5.5 and 7.5. Strong oxidizing agents form explosive mixtures with glycerin.<strong>Iode &#8211; Jodum &#8211; Iodum &#8211; Iodine T.K.:<\/strong>Iodine occurs as easily friable flakes or small crystals with a sharp, pungent odor, metallic appearance, and violet grayish-purple or grayish-black color. Solubility according to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP): Soluble in alcohol and chloroform; slowly soluble in glycerol. Solubility according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): Soluble 1:3000 in water, 1:13 in alcohol, 1:80 in glycerol; freely soluble in chloroform and ether; soluble in iodide solutions. It forms a pungent and irritating compound with acetone. Iodine exhibits a potent bactericidal effect. It is effective against fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores. Iodine exerts a lethal effect on all types of microorganisms, including viruses, and on spores even at low concentrations. When applied to the skin, iodine is absorbed slowly. It should not be applied to edematous skin.<strong>IN VETERINARY MEDICINE<\/strong>This formulation used for antiseptic purposes<\/p>\n<p>Rp<\/p>\n<p>Iodine                    2 g<\/p>\n<p>Potassium iodide      4 g<\/p>\n<p>Glycerin (85%)         90 g<\/p>\n<p>It is used as an antiseptic in animals for diseases of the gums, mouth, and mucous membranes, as well as for skin wounds. Due to the iodine it contains, it is a broad-spectrum antiseptic effective against bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and against spores at effective concentrations. Since it contains glycerin, which has moisturizing and emollient properties as a vehicle, it can be comfortably used for oral and mucosal antisepsis. It should be applied to the affected area 3-4 times a day until healing occurs. It should be noted that irritation may occur with prolonged use. It should not be used with alkalis as they may reduce its disinfectant activity, and it should also be noted that it can cause chemical burns to tissue when used topically with mercurial antiseptics.
