Ear drops containing aluminium acetate reduce edema and inflammation in the ear by creating an acidic environment that is harmful to pathogenic bacteria. Such drops also exhibit hygroscopic properties. In dermatology, aluminium acetate solutions are also incorporated into the composition of astringent lotions prepared to reduce skin irritation. Preparations containing aluminium acetate are known as Burow’s creams, emulsions, lotions, or solutions. Aluminium subacetate (basic aluminium acetate) is also an astringent used topically. Aluminium salts should not be used in cases of severe renal failure due to the risk of aluminium toxicity. Aluminium is absorbed orally and can accumulate in the body. Preparations containing aluminium salts should not be used in patients with renal disease or failure unless signs and symptoms of toxicity and serum levels are closely monitored. In addition, it should be kept in mind that citrates present in the composition of many effervescent preparations will increase aluminium absorption from aluminium salts.Aluminium Acetate lotion:

Rp.

Aluminium acetate solution 50 ml

Purified water, freshly boiled and cooled to 1000 mlThe formula must be prepared fresh with previously boiled and cooled distilled water. It is recommended not to apply the undiluted lotion to the skin. The lotion should not be used if there is a precipitate. It is used externally as an antiseptic and astringent. It can be stored for 7 days.

If we recall theAluminium acetatesolution in the formula;Aluminium Acetate Solution = Burow’s Solution = Aluminium Acetate Ear Drops:

Rp.

Aluminium sulphate 225 g

Acetic acid 250 ml

Tartaric acid 45 g

Calcium carbonate 100 g

Water for preparations 750 ml

Preparation:Aluminium sulphate is dissolved in approximately 600 ml of water without heating at room temperature (200 C). Acetic acid is added, and then the calcium carbonate suspension mixed with the remaining portion of the water is added slowly and stirred, allowing it to stand in a cool place for less than 24 hours. The mixture is filtered, and tartaric acid is added. While tartaric acid increases stability, it also neutralizes and acts as a buffer. The pH should not be less than 4.0. This formula is also prepared using different methods. The method we have published here is described in the British Pharmaceutical Codex (1973).

When Aluminium acetate or Aluminium subacetate solutions are requested, this solution is dispensed. It should be used diluted.

Storage: It should be stored in well-filled containers in a cool place.

Wishing you a good week…

References:

1- Tıbbi Formüler 11th Edition (Prof. Kasım Cemal Güven)

2- Ankara University General and Industrial Pharmaceutical Technology I (Prof. Dr. Enver İzgü)

3- The Pharmaceutical Codex 1979 (Eleventh Edition)

4- RxMediaPharma® 2016 Interactive Drug Information Source.

Spec.
