Compounded solution in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men<\/strong>Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Also known as common baldness, male pattern baldness, or androgenic hair loss, AGA is a form of hair loss that occurs under the influence of androgens in genetically predisposed individuals. It has been established that the condition develops in genetically susceptible individuals due to androgens. Recent publications have demonstrated that even normal levels of androgens are sufficient to trigger hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals.<\/p>\n Two agents approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of AGA in men are topical minoxidil and oral finasteride. To avoid potential adverse effects associated with the oral administration of finasteride, formulations designed for topical application are currently used.<\/p>\n As an example, the preparation given below is used in the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia.Formula:<\/strong><\/p>\n For 100 ml<\/strong><\/p>\n Minoxidil 10 g<\/strong><\/p>\n Finasteride 100 mg<\/strong><\/p>\n Biotin 200 mg<\/strong><\/p>\n Caffeine citrate 50 mg<\/strong><\/p>\n Propylene glycol 10 g<\/strong><\/p>\n Distilled water 30 ml<\/strong><\/p>\n Sulfuric acid 20% solution pH 4.5-5.0<\/strong><\/p>\n Ethyl Alcohol 96% qs 100 ml<\/strong><\/p>\n Ingredients in the formula;<\/strong>Minoxidil (Loniten, Rogaine, C9H15N5O, MW 209.25) is used as an antihypertensive and a topical hair growth stimulant. Minoxidil is a white or off-white, odorless, crystalline substance that is slightly soluble in water up to approximately 2 mg \/ mL. It is readily soluble in propylene glycol or ethanol; and insoluble in acetone or ethyl acetate. Minoxidil is commercially available in various forms as 2-5% topical solutions and foams.<\/p>\n Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar, C23H36N2O2, MW 372.54) melts at approximately 257 \u00b0C, is freely soluble in alcohol, and is very slightly soluble in water. It is a white to off-white crystalline structure. It is used exclusively in men for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). It is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and is primarily used to treat enlarged prostate or hair loss in men. This medication is not used in women and children.<\/p>\n Biotin (Bioepiderm, coenzyme R, vitamin B7, vitamin H, factor W, C10H16N2O3S, MW 244.31) is a white, crystalline powder that is very slightly soluble in water and alcohol. A vitamin, biotin is also widely used in the treatment of hair loss, brittle nails, and other conditions.<\/p>\n Caffeine citrate (Cafcit, C14H18N4O9, MW 386.31) is known as a white, odorless powder with a slightly bitter, acidic taste. 1 g dissolves in approximately 4 mL of warm water.<\/p>\n Propylene glycol (C3H8O2) is a clear, colorless, viscous, practically odorless liquid with a sweet taste, resembling glycerin. It has a specific gravity of 1.038 g \/ mL and is miscible with acetone, chloroform, 95% ethanol, glycerin, and water.<\/p>\n Ethyl alcohol (alcohol, ethanol, grain alcohol, C2H5OH, MW 46.07) is a clear, colorless, and volatile liquid with a slight, characteristic odor and a burning taste. It is miscible with chloroform, glycerin, and water.Preparation of the formula:<\/strong>The required amount of each component for the total quantity to be prepared is accurately calculated and weighed or measured. Propylene glycol, ethyl alcohol (40 mL), and distilled water are mixed. Minoxidil is added to this mixture and dissolved. Sulfuric acid 20% solution is added slowly and dropwise to the solution until a pH between 4.5 and 5.0 is reached. Biotin, finasteride, and caffeine citrate are added and mixed thoroughly. The formula is prepared by adding a sufficient quantity of ethyl alcohol to bring it to the final volume and mixing well. It should be packaged in tightly closed, light-resistant containers.<\/p>\n Labeling: Keep out of reach of children.
