Zinc oxide paste is added and mixed thoroughly.

(Note: In this formula, Burow’s solution is in a lower proportion.)Uses: These formulas are traditionally used for their astringent and protective properties. They can be used to soothe inflammatory skin conditions such as athlete’s foot, diaper rash, dry skin, insect bites, and poison ivy rash.Packaging: Packaged in plastic or glass ointment jars or in plastic tubes.Labeling: For external use only. Use only as directed.Stability: Can be used up to an expiration date of 6 months after preparation.DiscussionFor years, various “1-2-3 ointments” prepared by pharmacists have been seen. The following are merely an example of the existing variations. They all carry the astringent properties of Burow’s solution combined with an absorption vehicle. Some also contain a second vehicle. The purpose of the absorption vehicle is to retain the water within the Burow’s solution. These preparations are easy and safe to compound, and anecdotal evidence has demonstrated their usefulness in many dermatological conditions.Burow’s solution (Aluminum acetate topical solution)is a clear, colorless liquid with a faint acetous odor, a sweetish, astringent taste, and a pH of 3.6–4.4. It contains approximately 5% acetic acid and is generally used as an astringent dressing to treat conditions such as fungal infections, dermatitis, diaper rash, dry skin, otitis externa, and poison ivy poisoning. Dilutions of the solution between 1:10 and 1:40 and these semi-solid preparations are widely used as wet dressings.Anhydrous lanolin (wool fat), is a yellow, tenacious, unctuous mass with a faint, characteristic odor. It melts between 36ºC and 40ºC; it is insoluble in water, but can be mixed without separation with approximately twice its weight of water. It is frequently used as an ingredient in ointments, especially when aqueous solutions are to be incorporated. In water-in-oil emulsions, the aqueous phase is enclosed to form the internal phase.Cold cream (petrolatum rose water ointment), is a preparation whose formula has changed over the years. It is used as an emollient, cleansing cream, and water-in-oil emulsion ointment base. In the current formula, mineral oil is substituted for almond oil and the fragrance of rose oil is omitted. These changes have produced a more stable product.zinc oxide ointment, contains 20% zinc oxide and 15% mineral oil in white ointment. Due to its astringent properties, it is used as a sunscreen and as a vehicle in various dermatological preparations.zinc oxide paste, contains 25% zinc oxide and 25% starch in white petrolatum. It is commonly used as an astringent, protectant, and sunscreen.

There are numerous different variations of these formulas formed by adding corn starch, clotrimazole cream, and other mixtures to enhance the antifungal properties of the preparation. When adding any ingredient, its stability in an acidic, aqueous medium must be evaluated.

There are also additional products bearing the name “Burow’s”. The compounded formula for such a product (Burow’s emulsion) is: Aluminum acetate solution, 2 ml; peanut oil, 40 ml; polysorbate 80, 2 ml; zinc oxide, 10 g; talc, 10 g; lanolin, 10 g, and purified water q.s. to 100 ml.

Wishing you a good week…Source:Compounding Articles Book / Pharm.
