Dear Colleagues, in this article, I will share with you a formula prescribed for impetigo in France.<\/p>\n

As you know, impetigo is a skin disorder resulting from the infection of wounds and abrasions on the skin with staphylococci and streptococci; it is mostly contagious, starts with soft superficial vesicles, and forms a thick yellowish crust when these burst. It is most commonly encountered on the face and is also referred to as superficial pyoderma.<\/p>\n

To return to our formula;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sulfate de cuivre \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026. 0.10 g<\/p>\n

Sulfate de zinc \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.. 0.35 g<\/p>\n

Oxyde zinc \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026 10.00 g<\/p>\n

Camphre \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026… 0.10 g<\/p>\n

Eau purifi\u00e9e \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026… 10.00 g<\/p>\n

Lanoline \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.. 20.00 g<\/p>\n

Vaseline \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026. 59.45 g<\/p>\n

Ingredients in the formula<\/strong><\/p>\n

Copper Sulfate – Copper Sulphate – Cuivre sulfate – Bluestone<\/strong>;<\/strong> It is a blue crystalline substance. It dissolves in 3 parts water and 3.5 parts glycerin. It is insoluble in alcohol. Copper sulfate and other soluble copper salts exhibit an astringent effect on mucous membranes; their concentrated solutions have a corrosive effect. The main copper salts used in treatment are: Copper chloride, copper sulfate, and copper gluconate.<\/p>\n

Zinc sulfate – Sulfate de zinc T.K. – Zinksulfat<\/strong>; They are colorless, prismatic crystals. It dissolves in 0.66 parts water, 0.15 parts boiling water, and 23 parts glycerin. It is insoluble in alcohol. Topically applied zinc exhibits astringent, mild antiseptic, and disinfectant effects. This effect is due to zinc ions precipitating proteins. It is bactericidal and fungicidal.  Its 0.1%-1% solution is used as an ophthalmic antiseptic and its 4-5% solution as a skin antiseptic. It has a mild vasodilator effect. It does not show decongestant activity.<\/p>\n

Zinc oxide – zinci oxide – oxyde de zinc<\/strong>; It is an active ingredient with astringent properties known for its mild antiseptic qualities. It is used in eczema, burns, diaper rash, and friction-induced skin damage. Zinc oxide ointment contains 20%, and zinc oxide paste contains 25% zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is not absorbed through the skin, and because it does not dissolve in water, it is applied in the form of powder, ointment, or paste.<\/p>\n

SYNTHETIC CAMPHOR, Camphre synthetique, Camphora synthetica<\/strong><\/p>\n

Physical properties:<\/strong> Colorless or white, with a characteristic and pungent odor, burning, bitterish, and then cooling-tasting pieces, or white, crystalline powder; very slightly soluble in water, highly soluble in chloroform, alcohol, and fixed oils.<\/p>\n

NATURAL CAMPHOR:<\/strong> Colorless or white, with a characteristic and pungent odor, burning, slightly bitter, and then cooling-tasting crystalline masses or white crystalline powder; dissolves in approximately 600 parts water, 1 part alcohol, 4 parts olive oil, 1.5 parts oil of turpentine, 0.4 parts ether, 0.25 parts chloroform, and 0.5 parts acetic acid; insoluble in alkalis.<\/p>\n

Eau purifi\u00e9e – Eau distille<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lanoline – Graisse de laine – Adeps lanae – Refined wool fat – Lanae cera – Lanoleine T.K.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is obtained from sheep’s wool. It is light yellow in color and of ointment consistency. It dissolves in ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and boiling absolute alcohol. It absorbs twice its weight in water. It is an emulsifier. It forms a water-in-oil emulsion. In its anhydrous state, its consistency is quite firm. With the addition of water, a pasty texture is formed. It absorbs water by its weight. It is easily absorbed by the skin and is odorless. It is used as an ointment base (vehicle).<\/p>\n

The vehicle specified by the Turkish Pharmacopoeia under the name lanolinum contains 13 parts Lanolin, 3 parts Liquid paraffin, and 4 parts Water.<\/p>\n

Vaseline – Vaseline blanche<\/strong>; It is an ointment base with emollient properties known as white vaseline. It is not easily absorbed through the skin. It is obtained by bleaching yellow vaseline. It is odorless and tasteless.<\/p>\n

Preparation of the Formula<\/strong><\/p>\n

The calculated amount of lanolin and vaseline is melted in a 60 \u00b0C water bath. Camphor is pulverized and mixed with approximately 10 g of the melted lanolin and vaseline mixture. The remainder is mixed with zinc oxide in a glass mortar. Both mixtures are continuously mixed in a mortar until cooled. Then, the solution of copper sulfate and zinc sulfate dissolved in water is added to the formula to complete the preparation.<\/p>\n
