This week, we will examine a preparation in the form of an ointment used in the treatments of<\/strong> eczema, psoriasis<\/strong> and pityriasis<\/strong> (a skin disease located on the trunk and areas of the limbs close to the trunk, sometimes presenting with flaking) that destroys the keratin layer of the skin, has a (keratolytic) effect, and also contains the antibiotic active ingredient named Erythromycine.<\/p>\n

This formula also holds the characteristic of being a magistral formula included in the lecture notes of students studying Pharmacy in France. Therefore, I took care to ensure that the spelling of the active ingredients in the formula is as it appears in the book from which I translated.<\/p>\n

Lanoline \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026 7.50 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vaseline\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

ZnO\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eau \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026   \/ aa \u2026\u2026\u2026. 2.50 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

If we examine the active ingredients in the formula;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erythromycine-Erythromycin-Eritromicina;<\/strong> It is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic. Because it easily penetrates Gram-positive microorganisms, it exerts a stronger effect against such microorganisms. Since its antimicrobial spectrum is similar to penicillin, it is mostly used in individuals with penicillin allergies. Erythromycin, which is used particularly for diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, is produced by Saccharopolyspora erythraea.<\/p>\n

It acts by interfering with protein synthesis in bacteria.<\/p>\n

They generally have a bacteriostatic effect (it has a bactericidal effect only against beta-hemolytic streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae). It is ineffective against anaerobic bacteria. Erythromycin taken into the body is metabolized in the liver. For this reason, its use is inadvisable in patients with liver failure.<\/p>\n

Its topical and oral forms are used in the treatment of acne. It is preferred in skin, soft tissue, and burn wound infections.<\/p>\n

Ichtyol-Ichthammol-Bitumol; Ichthyol:<\/strong> It is the water-soluble form of a crude petroleum-like mixture obtained by treatment with sulfuric acid. It is helpful in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema, abscesses, and acne-type inflammatory skin conditions. Ichthyol Ointment is absorbed through the skin depending on the surface area where the ointment is applied. There are some records indicating an increase in the proportion of sulfur in the urine during the use of ichthyol.<\/p>\n

Ichthyol Ointment helps chronic inflammations, boils, and pimples to mature and be cleansed from within. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, it also possesses antibacterial, antimycotic, antipruritic, antiseborrheic, and antieczematous properties. It should be used with caution in children and during pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Ichthyol Ointment must not come into contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.<\/p>\n

Lanoline-Adeps lanae-Lanae cera;<\/strong> It is an ointment base obtained from sheep’s wool, used in pharmaceutical technology, with moisturizing and emollient properties on the skin.<\/p>\n

Vaseline-Vaselinum album-Paraffinum album;<\/strong> It is an excipient used as a vehicle in pharmaceutical technology that softens and moisturizes the skin, obtained by bleaching soft yellow paraffin.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

ZnO-Zinc oxide-Zinci Oxidum-Blanc de zinc;<\/strong> Zinc oxide is an active ingredient with mild astringent and weak antiseptic properties. Zinc oxide is used in combination with coal tar or ichthammol in the treatment of eczema.<\/p>\n

Eau-Aqua Destillata-Wasser-Distilled water;<\/strong> In pharmacy, when water is mentioned, distilled water should be understood. The usability period of distilled water is limited. In any case, it must be boiled before use.<\/p>\n

Preparation of the formula;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erythromycin is wetted with about 1 to 2 g of 95% alcohol. In a mortar, zinc oxide is triturated with the wetted erythromycin, distilled water is added to it, and it is thoroughly mixed with lanolin until the water phase is absorbed. Vaseline is added onto this mixture, and finally, the formula is completed by adding the ichthyol, which is weighed on a piece of paraffin-coated parchment paper placed on a watch glass.<\/p>\n

Directions for use;<\/strong> Used in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, and pityriasis.<\/strong><\/p>\n
