The main active ingredient in our formula this week, Peru Balsam, is a drug from the legume family known for its antiseptic and cicatrizing<\/strong> effects. Balsamum Peruvianum-Peruvian balsam-Baume du Perou T.K.<\/strong> is obtained from Myroxylon pereirae, a tree species native to Central and South America. It contains cinnamic and benzoic acids.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is a semi-transparent, yellowish, viscous liquid with a pleasant vanilla aroma. While soluble in 1 part alcohol, it is partially soluble in ether, acetic acid, and petroleum ether. It is antiseptic. It accelerates epithelial regeneration. Its 12% solution is used in eczema and pruritus, while a mixture of 3 parts Peru balsam and 1 part glycerin is used against scabies. It is a substance that typically separates from ointment bases and is difficult to incorporate. The best results are achieved with petrolatum bases. However, the addition of certain excipients such as soap or castor oil to petrolatum is required. Hydrophilic ointment bases are also suitable bases for Peru balsam. Peru balsam can dissolve up to about 50% in castor oil.<\/p>\n

Borate de sodium-Borax anhydrous<\/strong>: Found as an odorless, transparent, colorless crystalline powder. It has weak antiseptic properties. In addition to being used in eczema and erythema,   it is used in the form of a gargle or mouthwash in stomatitis, aphthous ulcers, and thrush (muguet). It is also preferred in creams for emulsifying purposes.<\/p>\n

Oxyde de zinc-Zinc oxide<\/strong>: It possesses astringent and weak antiseptic properties. It is used in eczema, burns, and skin lesions.<\/p>\n

Huile d amande douce-Oleum amygdalae-Almond oil<\/strong>: It is a pale yellow liquid with a nutty taste and a characteristic scent. It contains oleic acid, along with small amounts of linoleic and palmitic acid triglycerides. It is obtained by cold pressing bitter or sweet almonds. It is exceptionally rich in vitamin E. It has a repairing, protective, nourishing, and softening effect on the skin.<\/p>\n

Preparation:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The weighed zinc oxide and borax are crushed in a glass mortar and levigated with almond oil. Petrolatum is added and mixed until homogeneous. In another mortar, Peru balsam and lanolin are mixed. Finally, the mixtures from both mortars are combined and thoroughly mixed.<\/p>\n

I would like to remind you that Peru balsam should not be mixed directly with zinc oxide, almond oil, and petrolatum. Due to its antiseptic and cicatrizing properties, the formula is used in eczema (nipple eczema, etc.) and pruritic skin diseases.<\/strong><\/p>\n
