Dear colleagues; this week we will examine a formula containing Castor Oil, which is a fixed oil obtained by cold pressing from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant of the Euphorbiaceae family.<\/p>\n

Taken from the Spanish National Formulary, this formula is used by external application for seborrhea of the scalp.<\/p>\n

Formula:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Acido salicilico             4 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

Resorcina                     4 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aceite de risino            4 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alcohol etilico c.s.p.     1 litro<\/strong><\/p>\n

Substances in the formula:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Acide salicylique [FP; DCF]- Salicyls\u00e4ure [IUPAC; ASK; Ph. Eur.]- Acido salicilico [FU]:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Salicylic acid is white or colorless acicular crystals or a white fluffy crystalline powder. Its synthetic form is white and odorless. When prepared from natural methyl salicylate, it has a pale yellow or light pink color and a faint minty odor. It is soluble in water 1:460, boiling water 1:15, alcohol and ether 1:3, and chloroform 1:45. Salicylic acid accelerates desquamation. It exhibits a mild fungicidal effect. Salicylic acid is rapidly absorbed through the skin and slowly eliminated in the urine. Systemic acute salicylate poisoning (salicylism) may occur due to excessive application of salicylic acid over large skin areas. Fatalities, predominantly among children, have been reported resulting from such misuse. To minimize the risk of systemic absorption following topical application, salicylic acid should not be used for prolonged periods and in high concentrations, and its application to large body surfaces or inflamed or broken skin should be avoided. Salicylic acid should be stored at room temperature below 30\u00b0C and in tightly closed airtight containers. It should be protected from light.<\/p>\n

Resorcinol- Resorcinol [IUPAC; USP; P.Cx.79; BP; FP; DCF; INCI]- Resorcinolo [FU]- Resorcinolum- Dioxybenzolum- 1,3-Benzoldiol:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Resorcinol occurs as colorless, white or practically white, or pale pinkish-gray needle-like crystals or crystalline powder. It has a characteristic odor. Its melting point is between 109-112\u00b0C. Its color turns red under the influence of air and light. It is soluble 1:1 in water and alcohol; freely soluble in ether and glycerol. Its 5% aqueous solution gives a neutral or acidic reaction to litmus. Resorcinol is incompatible with iron salts. Resorcinol is a phenolic compound. Like all phenolic compounds, it disrupts the permeability of bacterial and fungal cytoplasmic membranes. Thus, it exerts a weak to moderate germicidal effect. It is an agent with a narrow spectrum of activity. Resorcinol is a phenolic compound used as an antiseptic disinfectant. Due to its antifungal effect, it is included in the composition of preparations used topically for the treatment of skin macerations and ulcerations. It is used topically as an antiseborrheic against seborrhea of the skin and in certain diseases of the oral mucosa. Resorcinol should be stored protected from light.<\/p>\n

Castor oil- Huile de ricin [FP]- Olio di ricino [FU]- Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil [INCI]- Rizinus\u00f6l, natives [Ph. Eur.]:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has cleansing, lubricating, laxative, and anthelmintic actions. It is used in ophthalmic, topical, emulsion, and capsule dosage forms. It contains triricinolein, triglycerides, vitamin E, ricinine, and ricin. It is also used externally as an emollient. It contains approximately 80% ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is a triglyceride. It is an almost colorless or very pale yellow, faintly scented, thick, and clear liquid that is initially tasteless in the mouth but later leaves a slightly acrid taste. It is soluble in alcohol; miscible with absolute alcohol, chloroform, ether, and glacial acetic acid; slightly soluble in petroleum ether. Castor oil is used as a laxative. However, more modern medications with laxative effects are available today. Castor oil has also found applications in ophthalmology. It provides a soothing effect against irritation caused by foreign bodies in the eye and is therefore applied to the conjunctiva as a demulcent. Additionally, it serves as a vehicle (carrier base) in the composition of certain injectable preparations. When taken orally, castor oil is hydrolyzed in the small intestine by the action of lipase into glycerol and ricinoleic acid. Its purgative effect is attributed to ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid has an irritating effect on the intestinal mucosa. By inhibiting Na+, K+-ATPase in the epithelial cells of the small intestine, it prevents water absorption, resulting in diarrhea. Castor oil is taken orally. After oral administration, it is broken down into glycerol and ricinoleic acid by the action of lipase in the small intestine. It must be evaluated as Category X throughout pregnancy.<\/p>\n

Alcohol- Ethanol- Alcohol [INCI; NF; USP]- Alcool [FP; FU9]- Spiritus vini- Weingeist:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alcohol is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and water. In the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), alcohol is designated as “Ethanol (96 per cent)” and defined as containing not less than 96% and not more than 96.6% v\/v. It is a clear, colorless, and mobile liquid with a characteristic odor and a burning taste; it is volatile and ignites readily, burning with a smokeless blue flame. It is miscible with water; upon mixing, the temperature of the mixture rises and the volume contracts. It is miscible with chloroform, ether, glycerol, and most other organic solvents. According to the BP, dehydrated alcohol (Ethanol, BP 1993; absolute alcohol; dehydrated alcohol) must contain not less than 99.4% v\/v or 99% w\/w of C2<\/sub>H5<\/sub>OH (density 788.16 to 791.2 kg\/m3). According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), dehydrated alcohol (Dehydrated Alcohol, USP 23) contains not less than 99.5% v\/v or 99.2% w\/w of C2<\/sub>H5<\/sub>OH (specific gravity not more than 0.7964 at 15.56\u00b0C). According to the BP, dilute alcohol (Dilute Ethanols, BP 1993) is available in several different concentrations. One of them is 90% ethanol, also known as “Rectified Spirit”. Alcohol strength is expressed as percentage by weight at a specific temperature. Alcohol should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool place. Care should be taken to keep it away from open flames.<\/p>\n

Preparation of the formula:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mix the castor oil into the alcohol using a glass rod. Complete the formula by dissolving the Resorcinol and Salicylic acid in this mixture. Store in a glass bottle protected from light.<\/p>\n
