Soluble in 1.7 parts water, 1 part alcohol, and 1 part ether. Sparingly soluble in chloroform and carbon disulfide. It adsorbs atmospheric oxygen; this adsorption increases in the presence of alkali.

Externally, it is used as an antiseptic in a 10% ethereal solution or a 5-10% ointment in cases of lupus, psoriasis, pityriasis (a dermatosis characterized by bran-like desquamation), and certain eczema cases. Incompatible with silver, gold, copper, and mercury salts, camphor, salol, menthol, and phenol. Lenigallol is the triacetic acid ester of pyrogallol; it is non-toxic and does not cause skin irritation. It causes conjunctivitis on contact with the eyes. It has the appearance of a white powder insoluble in water. It does not stain laundry. It is used externally. While Lenigallol is used as an ointment at 0.5-5% particularly in children for acute and subacute eczema, it can be used at rates up to 50% in adults with psoriasis. The effect of Pyrogallol and Lenigallol is faster and more intense when combined with petrolatum on the skin. Therefore, they have been reported to be effective in greasy bases. Painful lesions can be treated with the addition of a local anesthetic. Alkalis must be kept away. To prevent poisoning that may occur through dermal absorption, no more than 5 g per day should be used.

Acidum salicylicum – Salicylsäure – Acide salicylique – Salicylic acid:

Salicylic acid is a white or colorless acicular crystalline substance or a white fluffy crystalline powder. Its synthetic form is white and odorless. When prepared from natural methyl salicylate, it has a light yellow or pale pink color and a faint mint odor. It dissolves in water at 1:460, boiling water at 1:15, alcohol and ether at 1:3, and chloroform at 1:45.

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic medication. It is used in the treatment of diseases characterized by hyperkeratosis and skin scaling, such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, ichthyosis, psoriasis, and acne. Solutions and ointments used for this purpose are available. Salicylic acid accelerates desquamation. It exhibits mild fungicidal activity. Salicylic acid is rapidly absorbed through the skin and slowly eliminated in the urine. Systemic acute salicylate poisoning (salicylism) may occur due to excessive application of salicylic acid over large skin areas. Deaths, mostly involving children, have been reported following such misuse. To minimize the risk of systemic absorption associated with topical application, salicylic acid should not be used for long periods or in high concentrations, and application to large body surface areas, inflamed, or open skin should be avoided.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) with the chemical formula C6H4(OH)CO2H. This colorless, crystalline organic acid is generally referred to as a plant hormone. It is a product of salicin metabolism. It possesses chemical properties similar to Acetylsalicylic Acid, known as Aspirin. It is used in the treatment of fungal species such as Tinea barbae, Tinea capitis, and Tinea cruris. Due to its sufficiently potent analgesic and antipyretic, and rarely antiseptic effects, it is included in formulas and used externally as an analgesic in anti-rheumatic applications. It is preferred against mycotic eczema due to its caustic effect. In dermatology, salicylic acid is often used in combination with lactic acid to treat warts and corns. The mechanism of action of salicylic acid and lactic acid in the treatment of warts is not fully known. It is thought to be due to the mechanical removal of epidermis cells infected with the wart virus as a result of their keratolytic effects. They are also effective against corns through their keratolytic activities. It is used as a gargle in the treatment of tonsillitis. It is used at a dose of 0.50% against fermentation in foods such as beer, wine, meat, etc.

Dibromsalicylii – Resorcine – Dioxibenzol – Resorcinol:

It is a white crystalline substance with a characteristic odor. Its color turns red under the influence of air and light. It has a burning taste. It dissolves in 1 part water and 1 part alcohol, as well as in ether, glycerin, and benzene, while it does not dissolve in chloroform. Incompatible with acetanilide, camphor, chloral hydrate, menthol, and phenol. Today, resorcinol is used externally as an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is used externally (ointment 10-20%, solution 0.1%) in psoriasis, acne, seborrhea, eczema, and other skin diseases. Application to very large surfaces should be avoided. M.D. is 0.50-1.5 g.

Coal Tar – Goudron de Houille – Coal tar – Pix Carbonis – Pix Lithanthracis – Steinkohlenteer:

It is prepared by the dry distillation of coal. It has a naphthalene-like odor and a burning taste. It is a dense liquid close to black in color. It hardens on contact with air. It is slightly soluble in water. While soluble in chloroform and benzene, it is partially soluble in alcohol and ether. Its density gradually increases under the influence of air. It burns with a bright, smoky flame. Its saturated solution gives an alkaline reaction to litmus. Coal tar is incorporated into medicinal shampoos, soaps, and ointments used to kill and remove head lice, as well as for dandruff and psoriasis. Soluble extracts (2%) prepared by the dry distillation of coal tar are also used in the treatment of dandruff. Tars and tar oils reduce the thickness of the epidermis. They are antipruritic and exhibit a weak antiseptic effect. Topically, they are used in the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and other skin diseases. Coal tar preparations have largely been replaced by wood tars. Ultraviolet light increases the efficacy of coal tar in the treatment of psoriasis. Some wood tars are incorporated into the composition of expectorant preparations. Tar has also been used in homeopathic medicine.

Past.
