Audere est facere: To dare is to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you may recall, I previously shared the projects of the \u015eanl\u0131urfa Chamber of Pharmacists with you, my esteemed colleagues, from this column under the slogan “Light rises from the east”. Since that day, I have received congratulatory messages from various circles. Of course, the true recipients of these congratulations are the hardworking, dedicated pharmacists of Urfa who set out with courage and put science before politics and empty words.<\/p>\n

Although we watched with concern and apprehension the rhetoric of some of our colleagues at the TEB inter-regional meeting held in Mardin last week\u2014which was far removed from science and pharmacy, prioritizing professional politics and election anxiety\u2014we will never lose our hope for the future. Now, I share with you this report, penned by my esteemed colleague Pharm. Ali Erdem, briefly summarizing the commendable magistral project works of the \u015eanl\u0131urfa Chamber of Pharmacists.<\/p>\n

40 Magistral Formulations Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Within the scope of the KOSGEB-supported thematic project coordinated by the \u015eanl\u0131urfa Chamber of Pharmacists in 2016, 50 pharmacists received year-long training on magistral formulas by Ahmet Nezihi Pekcan. Following the training, our pharmacists’ interest in compounding and their capacity to prepare such prescriptions increased.<\/p>\n

During the project period, magistral formulations were brought up during a visit by \u015eanl\u0131urfa family physicians to our chamber, and it was decided to organize a joint seminar. 70 family physicians and 50 pharmacists attended the seminar titled “The Importance of Magistral Formulas in the Treatment of Diseases in Primary Care”<\/strong>, presented by Pharm. Ahmet Nezihi Pekcan on December 16, 2016. With this seminar, the aim was to encourage the prescription of “national magistral formulas”<\/strong> in subsequent periods and to improve the physician-pharmacist relationship to an optimal level. In the meetings held with the family physicians association following the seminar, it was decided to prepare practical magistral formula prescription pads for physicians, and a joint working group was established within this scope.<\/p>\n

The working group decided to prepare formulations for 25 diagnoses frequently encountered in primary care. Under the consultancy of Pharm. Ahmet Nezihi Pekcan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Buket Aksu, 40 formulas for 25 diagnoses were compiled from the books ‘Magistral Articles’ (Ahmet Nezihi Pekcan), ‘Magistral Drug Guide’ (TEB), and ‘Magistral Prescriptions’ (Anooshirvan Miandji), and prepared by the formula development team of the \u015eanl\u0131urfa Chamber of Pharmacists. The formulas were compiled into practical prescription pads, aiming to provide ease of prescribing for physicians. In addition, the formulations were designed to be cost-effective, easily accessible, and easily prepared in all community pharmacies. 39 of the created formulas were prepared in a format compliant with the Health Implementation Communiqu\u00e9 (SUT) so that they would be reimbursed by the Social Security Institution (SGK).<\/p>\n

Following this joint effort, the boards of directors decided to organize a two-day program in September 2017 in \u015eanl\u0131urfa under the title PHARMACIST-PHYSICIAN MEETINGS (Symposium on Frequently Encountered Diseases in Primary Care and Magistral Formulations).<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a scientific study submitted for ethics committee approval as of July 11 was prepared by this working group. Our randomized controlled clinical trial was established under the title “Comparison of the use of magistral formulations with modern clinical treatment in terms of patient satisfaction and patient compliance”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For the study, 16 physicians, serving as volunteer researchers, will evaluate 20 different patients using the EUROPEP satisfaction survey after inviting them back 15 days following prescription issuance. In addition, a survey questioning demographic data and patient compliance will be prepared. The number of patients planned to be included in the study is 320.<\/p>\n

Preparations for a pharmacist handbook for magistral prescription pads are also underway, aiming to ensure standardization in the preparation of magistral formulas and to create a list of recommendations alongside these formulas. Magistral formula prescriptions will add value to the professional competence of both physicians and pharmacists and enhance treatment diversity. On the other hand, we also believe that this project, which can be evaluated within the scope of cost-effectiveness and a national project, has the potential to prevent unnecessary expenditures in our country’s healthcare sector and raise the quality of patient treatment.”<\/p>\n
