When it said ‘one who earns income from the work they do’, I could not help but wonder if it was referring to us, that is, pharmacists.

In short, I would like to say to our professional elders who deem the title HEALTH PROFESSIONAL worthy of us that these definitions do not fit us at all. In short, I do not want to be a Professional of the Profession—meaning, it is very painful that this profession is perceived merely as one practiced to earn a living… Although even if we wanted to be, we could no longer be, because if you notice the definition, dictionaries define the word professional as a person who earns income from the work they do. Moreover, unfortunately, we are now very, very far from earning an income from this profession.

I have always preferred being a “Master of the Art of Healing” over being a “Health Professional”.

“SECUNDUM ARTEM”
What a magical term. “ACCORDING TO OUR ART”
I love this term. It reminds me that I am a pharmacist. It expresses that the Profession of Pharmacy is an art of healing. It is magical, almost a divine voice… Coming from the depths.
SECUNDUM ARTEM… The pharmacist’s art. The pharmacist puts on the white coat and retreats into the laboratory. At that moment, no one can interfere; while practicing the art, no one can intervene. Putting forth all professional knowledge and skills, compounding the medicine begins. So much so that while practicing this art (provided it is not related to dosage), the pharmacist makes the desired adjustments without even consulting the prescribing physician.

Professional rules, professional ethics, and deontological regulations have established all these details: which adjustments the Pharmacist can make to the formulation while practicing the art without even informing the prescribing physician, and for which adjustments the pharmacist is obliged to inform the physician.

If you like, let us examine these briefly.

A) Not required to inform the physician.

Changing the mixing order

Affixing a ‘shake well’ label

Preparing an emulsion or suspension with officinal substances

Using a more appropriate form of the drug for the vehicle specified in the prescription

Others (includes the addition of diluents, buffers, preservatives, and similar inert substances)

NOTE: For the last two items, it is appropriate to inform the physician.

B) Changes requiring the physician’s approval

Addition of substances requiring a dosage change

Use of non-officinal emulsifying and suspending agents

Removal of problematic ingredients with negligible therapeutic effect from the formula

Changing the vehicle

Filtering and discarding inactive precipitates

Dispensing the problematic ingredient separately

Replacing a specified brand with another brand

Replacing an ingredient

Changing the dosage form

Now, as a final word, I would like to remind you of this: The pharmacist is the master of the art of healing. Provided it is not related to dosage, limited modifications can be made to the formula. These are exceptions granted to the master within defined boundaries. While making these corrections, the MASTER is not even obliged to inform the physician who wrote the prescription. It is very, very important that our colleagues at the SSI (SGK) also recognize this when approaching prescription deductions at this point. Otherwise, the result is the usurpation of a right granted to the master… ATTENTION!

Spec. Pharm.
