Alcoholic undecylenic solution in the treatment of fungal infections<\/strong>Dear Colleagues; this week we will examine together a formula used in the treatment of fungal infections of the epidermis.Rp.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Acidum undecylenicum        5 g<\/strong><\/p>\n

Solutio antiseptica    ad     100 ml<\/strong><\/p>\n

Substances included in the formula;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Undecylenic acid – Undecenoic acid – Undecylenique acide – Acido undecilenico;<\/strong>Obtained by distillation from ricinoleic acid. Undecylenic acid occurs as a colorless or light yellow, clear liquid or as white to very pale yellow crystals with a characteristic odor. Solubilities according to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP): Practically insoluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether, fixed and volatile oils. Solubilities according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): Practically insoluble in water; miscible with alcohol, chloroform, ether, volatile and fixed oils. It is an antimycotic. Undecylenic acid and undecylenate salts (e.g., calcium undecylenate, copper undecylenate, zinc undecylenate) are primarily used for conditions caused by dermatophyte fungi such astinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corpor<\/em>is as topical antifungal agents. Topical creams, ointments, and lotions are used for this purpose. It is used in moniliasis and mycotic vulvovaginitis. It has been administered internally in psoriasis at a daily dose of 8 g; however, its efficacy is questionable. These drugs are used either alone or in combination at total concentrations of 10-25%.Solutio Antiseptica;<\/strong>It is a preparation prescribed by dermatologists in Germany and used for its antiseptic and astringent properties. This solution can be used on its own, and it is also included under the name Solutio Antiseptica in many formulas, contributing to various preparations. Let us recall once again this important formula that I briefly mentioned in a previously published formulation.SOLUTIO ANTISEPTICA (FA)<\/strong>

Preparation of the Solutio Antiseptica formula;<\/strong>After the calculated amount of distilled water specified in the formula is boiled and cooled, rivanol is dissolved in the water and alcohol is added. Burow’s solution is then added to complete the preparation. It should not be forgotten that the formula is to be topped up to 100 g with distilled water. The preparation should be freshly prepared and protected from heat and light.Preparation of the formula:<\/strong>Undecylenic acid is dissolved in the antiseptic solution. The solution is for external use.<\/p>\n
