First, let us briefly look at what sprains and contusions are.

Soft tissue injury is a condition involving injury to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilaginous tissues. Sprains, strains, contusions, bruises, and tears in these areas are referred to as soft tissue injuries.

Contusion (Bruise)
When a blow hits any part of the body without creating an open wound, the capillaries (capillary networks) beneath the tissue rupture and bleed. The bleeding occupies an area depending on the number of ruptured vessels. After bleeding, pain and a burning sensation are felt at the site of impact. The bleeding area swells. The swelling turns purple first, then blue. As it heals, its color changes to green and turns yellow when it is about to heal. Meanwhile, the swelling subsides and the pain disappears on its own.

Sprain – Strain

A sprain and strain is an injury to the tissues that connect the bones of a joint and provide stability in joint movement. A sprain is a stretching and tearing of a ligament, whereas a strain is muscle stretching. Sprains and strains occur after a trauma, such as a sudden twisting or overstretching, that forces the joint to move beyond its normal range of motion. Although possible in all joints, they most frequently occur in the ankles, knees, and fingers. The severity of sprains and strains can range from mild to requiring surgical intervention. The most commonly sprained joints are the wrists, ankles, fingers, and knees. Generally, the symptoms of a closed fracture and those of a sprain show similarity. However, they can be distinguished by examining an X-ray film.

Symptoms: Swelling around the joint, tenderness, pain during movement, and bruising.

The formula for Unguentum Plumbi Subacetici / Lead Subacetate Ointment, which we can use in cases of sprains and contusions;

Rp.

Solutio plumbi subacetatis     30 g

Unguentum simplex               70 g

Substances included in the formula;

Solutio plumbi subacetatis;

LEAD WATER / DILUTE LEAD SUBACETATE SOLUTION / EAU BLANCHE / AQUA PLUMBI T.K. The preparation of the formula is briefly done by weighing and mixing the ingredients.

Eau de goulard; is used as a dressing solution due to its astringent property in various burns, cracks, strains, and bruises. In weeping allergic skin diseases, in conditions where bruising, swelling, and pain are observed particularly as a result of drug leakage into surrounding tissue after injections, and in soft tissue infections, it is a liquid magistral preparation applied to the skin as a compress 3-4 times a day for about 20 minutes to provide relief.

Unguentum simplex – Simple ointment T.F. 1974;

Rp.

Anhydrous lanolin              50 g

Solid paraffin                50 g

Cetostearyl alcohol         50 g

Vaseline, soft       850 g

Preparation of the formula;

Lead subacetate solution is added little by little onto the simple ointment melted in a water bath and stirred until cool.
