In acne cases, it creates an increase in mitotic activity (cell division and proliferation) and cell kinetics at the level of the infundibular canal (hair follicle canal). This hyperkeratinization leads to a corneal plug. This plug blocks the canal, preventing the normal flow of sebum. Small black (open) and white (closed) comedones form. Androgens play an important role in comedone formation. The comedone constitutes the first stage of acne. Therefore, an effective keratolytic treatment is necessary in acne management.

Rp.

Résorcine              1.00 g

Acide  salisilique    2.00 g

Propylène glycol    7.00 g

Ethanol a 70 0      100.00 g

Preparation:

Resorcinol and salicylic acid are dissolved in 700 alcohol. Its color turns red under the influence of air and light. It has a burning taste. It dissolves in 1 part water and 1 part alcohol, as well as in ether, glycerin, and benzene, but is insoluble in chloroform. It is incompatible with acetanilide, camphor, chloral hydrate, menthol, and phenol. Today, resorcinol is used externally as an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is used externally (ointment 10-20%, solution 0.1%) in psoriasis, acne, seborrhea, eczema, and other skin diseases. Application to very large surfaces should be avoided. M.D. is 0.50-1.5 g.

Acidum salicylicum- Salicylsäure- Acide salicylique- Salicylic acid:

It consists of white crystals. It dissolves in 500 parts water, 15 parts boiling water, 27 parts alcohol (99%), 2 parts ether, 80 parts olive oil, 100 parts glycerin, and 55 parts chloroform. Salicylic acid accelerates desquamation. It exhibits a mild fungicidal effect. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) with the chemical formula C6H4(OH)CO2H. This colorless, crystalline organic acid is generally used as a plant hormone. It is a product of salicin metabolism. It possesses chemical properties similar to acetylsalicylic acid, known as aspirin. It is used in the treatment of fungal species such as tinea barbae, tinea capitis, and tinea cruris. Due to its moderately potent analgesic and antipyretic, and rarely antiseptic effects, it is included in formulas and used externally as an analgesic in anti-rheumatic applications. It is preferred against mycotic eczema due to its caustic effect. In dermatology, salicylic acid is often combined with lactic acid in the treatment of warts and corns. The mechanism of action of salicylic acid and lactic acid in the treatment of warts is not fully known. It is thought to be related to the mechanical removal of epidermis cells infected with the wart virus as a result of their keratolytic effects. They are also effective against corns through their keratolytic activities. It is used as a gargle in the treatment of tonsillitis. It is used at a dose of 0.50% against fermentation in foods such as beer, wine, and meat.

Propylene’e glycol- Methylethyleneglycol- Methylglycol- Propylene glycol

It is an excipient used for various purposes in pharmaceutical preparations. It is used as a carrier for cosmetic products. Due to its moisturizing property, it is used instead of glycerin in topical moisturizing preparations. Propylene glycol may cause local irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. It is miscible with water, acetone, alcohol, and chloroform; soluble in ether; immiscible with fixed oils, but sometimes dissolves essential oils. It should be stored in a cool place and in airtight containers. It should be protected from light and moisture.

Aethanolum- Alcoholum- Ethanolum- Spiritus vini;

In ancient times, it was called the “water of life” and was practically believed to be a cure for almost every illness. An important property of alcohol is that it is an excellent solvent frequently used in most pharmaceutical formulations. While ethyl alcohol is effective at a concentration of 60-90%, a concentration of 70% (v/v) demonstrates optimal efficacy for skin antisepsis. Conversely, when the concentration falls below 50%, it largely loses its activity. Alcohol exhibits its effect by coagulating proteins and dissolving lipids. Since protein denaturation requires the presence of some water, the antimicrobial effect of absolute (96%) alcohol is weak.

Wishing you a good week…

Source:

Cahiers du préparateur en pharmacie

Travaux pratiques de préparation et de conditionnement des médicaments

Jean-Marie FONTENEAU  Philippe KLUSIEWICZ

Exp.
