VILLATE’S SOLUTIONDear colleagues; it is becoming increasingly difficult day by day for our ‘animal friends’, especially those living in metropolises, to freely sustain their lives. While forests, green areas, and the entire ecosystem are being destroyed day after day by being transformed into concrete piles, all living beings on earth are adversely affected by the rapid slaughter of nature. Harsh weather conditions make their struggle for survival even harder. They lose their lives due to the extreme heat in the summer months and cold weather in the winter months. Besides weather conditions, problems related to basic needs such as nutrition and shelter are among their greatest challenges. While serious efforts are made to protect and sustain animal life in developed countries, on our streets and avenues we frequently encounter animal accidents, especially caused by irresponsible and careless drivers.
When we look at developed countries;
While stray animals can be found in EU countries along the Mediterranean coast, as one moves northward they are not encountered due to climate and cultural reasons. In these countries, cats and dogs in particular live in homes.
While it is considered natural in Latin America for animals to live on the streets together with humans, stray animal life and trading on the streets have been banned in the USA and Europe. While legislation prevents violence against animals, it also takes them under protection and offers them better conditions. In developed countries like Switzerland, not only an animal’s physical health but also its mental health is considered important. For this reason, keeping a single cat at home is not permitted.
In our country, on the other hand, the enacted laws are inadequate and quite limited. Unfortunately, there is no visible work regarding animal welfare other than the efforts of non-governmental organizations, animal lovers, and conscientious citizens. Laws enacted on animal rights remain merely on paper. Although some forced amendments have been attempted in the “Animal Protection Law No. 5199”, which has been in force since 2004 under the pressure of the European Union, it is seen that these efforts are far from being a deterrent against violence committed against animals. In the new draft, person or persons who torture and mistreat animals will be able to get away with this act by merely paying an administrative fine of 750 TL to the state. However, cruel treatment of animals should not be evaluated within the scope of the Law on Misdemeanors, but rather, as stated in the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights, violence against animals must be evaluated within the framework of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).
With the laws to be enacted and proper education in schools, the entire society must be made aware that all living creatures on earth have equal rights to life. It must not be forgotten that the earth belongs to all living beings.
This week, I will share with you a formula prescribed in France for our animal friends, specifically used against injuries and trauma in horses.

Copper sulfate – Sulfate de cuivre – Bakır sülfat – Copper Sulphate – Cuivre sulfate – Bluestone; It is a blue crystalline substance. Soluble in 3 parts water and 3.5 parts glycerin. Insoluble in alcohol. Copper sulfate and other soluble copper salts exert an astringent effect on mucous membranes; their concentrated solutions have a corrosive effect. The principal copper salts used in therapy are: Copper chloride, copper sulfate, and copper gluconate.Zinc sulfate – Sulfate de zinc T.K. – Zinksulfat;They are colorless, prismatic crystals. Soluble in 0.66 parts water, 0.15 parts boiling water, and 23 parts glycerin. Insoluble in alcohol. Topically applied zinc exhibits astringent, mild antiseptic, and disinfectant effects. This effect is due to zinc ions precipitating proteins. It is bactericidal and fungicidal. Its 0.1%-1% solution is used as an ophthalmic antiseptic and its 4-5% solution as a skin antiseptic. It has a mild vasodilator effect. It does not exhibit decongestant activity.Soluté d’acétate basique de plomb – Basic lead acetate – Monobasic lead acetate;It is used for its astringent effect.Vinegar – Sirke – Essig-extrakt – Acetum; Vinegar; It was used by the Greeks and Romans in ancient times for its therapeutic properties. It is known to have been used for food preservation during the Babylonian period. It is used in ear hygiene due to its antibacterial property. It has been observed to have a superficial effect in the external ear, particularly against bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, and Proteus. Its diluted forms have been used in vaginal gels and douches, irrigation solutions, and preparations formulated for skin and nails as antibacterial (especially againstHaemophilus sp. andPseudomonas sp.), antifungal, and antiprotozoal agents. It also has expectorant, spermicidal, and astringent effects. It has been reported to be effective against jellyfish stings.Preparation of the formulaThe sulfates are crushed in a glass mortar, first dissolved with water, and then vinegar is added. The formula is completed with the addition of basic lead acetate solution. This formula is not used on open wounds, but on hematomas and sprains occurring in tissues as a result of trauma.
