Zinc undecylenate – Undecilenato de zinc – Zincum undecylenicum – Zinkundezylenat – Zinci undecylenas;
Zinc undecylenate is a fine powder that is white or off-white in color. It is practically insoluble in water, alcohol, and ether. It is applied topically as an antifungal in concentrations of 2–20% in the form of creams, ointments, lotions, and powders. Undecylenic acid and undecylenate salts (e.g., calcium undecylenate, copper undecylenate, zinc undecylenate) are topical antifungal agents primarily used for tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis caused by dermatophyte fungi. Undecylenic acid and its salts are called undecenoates. Zinc undecylenate is also known as zincate. These drugs are used either alone or in combination in total concentrations of 10–25%. Undecylenic acid and undecylenate salts were approved by the FDA in 1946. Undecylenic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid with fungistatic activity. Fatty acids reduce fungal proliferation by disrupting proliferation conditions. Unsaturated fatty acids may exhibit stronger activity than saturated fatty acids. While elongating the fatty acid chain increases efficacy, a low pH value can also enhance activity. Undecylenic acid, undecylenate salts, and zinc undecylenate preparations are applied topically to the skin. Pharmacokinetic data are not available. It is not known whether these preparations are absorbed through the epidermis or whether undecylenic acid is present at detectable levels in the blood.
Undecylenic acid – Undecenoic acid – Undecylenique acide – Acido undecilenico;
It is obtained by distillation from ricinoleic acid. Undecylenic acid is found as a colorless or light yellow, clear liquid, or as crystals with a characteristic odor, ranging in color from white to very light yellow. Its solubilities according to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP): Practically insoluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether, fixed oils, and volatile oils. Its solubilities according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): Practically insoluble in water, miscible with alcohol, chloroform, ether, volatile oils, and fixed oils. It is an antimycotic. Undecylenic acid and undecylenate salts (e.g., calcium undecylenate, copper undecylenate, zinc undecylenate) are topical antifungal agents primarily used for tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis caused by dermatophyte fungi. Topical creams, ointments, and lotions are used for this purpose. It is also used in moniliasis and mycotic vulvovaginitis. It has been administered internally in psoriasis at a daily dose of 8 g, though its efficacy is questionable. These drugs are used either alone or in combination at total concentrations of 10–25%.
Scots pine needle oil – Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) oil – Pini oleum – Pini aetheroleum;
Pine oil (Oleum Pini Silvestris) is obtained by steam distillation from the leafy branch tips of various pine (Pinus) species from the Pinaceae family. It is a colorless and fluid liquid with a pleasant scent and sharp taste. Pine oil is also obtained from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The main constituents of its composition consist of various pinenes, sylvestrene, cadinene, terpineol, and bornyl acetate. Scots pine oil (Oleum Pini Silvestris) is used externally in muscle pain, soft tissue rheumatism, and neuralgias. In productive cough with phlegm, it can be used orally and via inhalation, as well as externally. It is used as an expectorant, soothing agent in coughs associated with respiratory tract infections, and as an antiseptic in gonorrhea. In the common cold, it can be used via inhalation, externally, and in baths. Additionally, it is applied topically to the aching area as an anti-rheumatic ointment. Scots pine oil (Oleum Pini Silvestris) is not produced in our country. Oil of turpentine is used instead in therapy.
Talc – Talcum – Purified Talc;
Talc is natural hydrated magnesium silicate. It may contain varying amounts of aluminum silicate and iron. It is a very fine, light, homogeneous, white or off-white or grayish-white, odorless powder with a crystalline structure. When it comes into contact with the skin, it adheres immediately to the contact surface. Purified talc must be free from microscopic asbestos particles. Talc is practically insoluble in water and in dilute solutions of mineral acids and alkali hydroxides.
Calamine – Calamina – Prepared calamine;
According to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), calamine (Calamine BP 1993) consists of ferric oxide colored with basic zinc carbonate. It is an amorphous, impalpable, pink or reddish-brown powder. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), calamine consists of ZnO (98%) containing a small amount of ferric oxide (Fe2O3). It is a fine pink powder. Insoluble in water, it dissolves practically completely in mineral acids. Calamine is a mild astringent and antipruritic drug that forms a protective barrier when applied to the skin. It is a mineral preparation containing at least 98% zinc oxide with a small amount of iron. Zinc oxide provides a physical barrier against irritants. It also exerts a mild astringent effect because it absorbs water. It is included in the formulation of dusting powders, creams, lotions, or ointments used for skin disorders. Calamine lotion can be used as a skin antiseptic. Calamine lotion contains 8% calamine and 8% pure zinc.
Preparation of the Formula – Modus Operandi
Undecylenic acid, pine needle oil, and talc are mixed sequentially. Zinc undecylenate and kaolin are added to this mixture and thoroughly blended. The resulting powder mass is sieved through a No. 180 sieve and mixed again.
