Dear colleagues, following the numerous questions from you regarding the calculations for Aluminum subacetate solution that I wrote about last week, I deemed it appropriate to dedicate this article to the formula calculations that will provide answers to these questions.
According to T.K. (1954), SOLUTIO ALUMINII SUBACETATIS must contain at least 8.5% aluminum subacetate. Frequently included in hemorrhoid ointments and possessing an antiperspirant (sweat-preventing) effect, this solution is also used as a drying agent and deodorant.
First, if we recall our formula;

Aluminum sulfate 100 parts
Calcium carbonate 46 parts
Dilute acetic acid 120 parts (contains 29.7-30.6% acetic acid)
Water q.s.
According to T.K. 1954, solution aluminii subacetatis must contain at least 8.5% aluminum subacetate. After the preparation is compounded, assay/titration must be performed, and the amount of aluminum subacetate contained in the preparation along with the control date must be recorded on the label.
It is stored in the pharmacy as an officinal preparation (as a stock solution). With the help of this stock solution, more dilute aluminum subacetate solutions can be prepared. In this case, calculations are performed as seen in the examples below and the preparation is adjusted to the desired concentration.
Example: Prepare 300 g of Aluminum subacetate solution at a concentration of (4%).
Calculation
The amount of active ingredient in 300 grams of a preparation containing 4% active ingredient:
4×300/100=12 grams.
If the officinal preparation (sol. aluminum subacetate) at an 8.5% concentration is used in the compounding of the preparation, the amount to be taken from this solution for the 12 grams of aluminum subacetate required for the prescription is:
12×100/8.5=141.17 grams.
Preparation
141.17 grams of the 8.5% officinal preparation is weighed into a tared container and completed to 300 grams with water.
