It has a sharp odor reminiscent of vinegar. It is miscible with water, alcohol, glycerin, and chloroform. It is a clear, colorless liquid. It is corrosive to metals and tissues. It releases a certain amount of heat when diluted with water. An exothermic reaction occurs. It is also known as cold vinegar acid. It should be stored at room temperature. Inhalation, ingestion, or direct contact with the skin can cause serious injury or even death. It is combustible but does not ignite easily.
