Dear Colleagues, this week’s formula is not anonymous; it is a preparation prescribed by dermatologists in Germany and used for its antiseptic and astringent properties. I felt the need to elaborate further in my article on this important formula, which I briefly mentioned in a previously published formulation.
This solution can be used alone, or it can be included under the name solutio antiseptica in many formulas, contributing to various preparations.

Ingredients in the formula
Rivanol-Ethacridine lactate-Acrinol-Rivanolum-6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridine; It is a yellow acridine dye. It is sparingly soluble in alcohol, while soluble in 15 parts of water. Rivanol is an antibacterial* and neutral antiseptic* substance that exerts a bactericidal effect on many bacterial species. (antibacterial*: Acting against bacteria, destroying them or inhibiting their growth.)-( antisepsis*: Prevention of infection by killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms causing infection.) The pH of its 2% aqueous solution ranges between 5.5 and 7.0. While its 0.01-0.2% solutions or ointments are used as a skin antiseptic, 1/2000 and 1/1000 solutions were used against gonorrhea. It is also used externally as a gargle for throat antisepsis and as an ointment in certain dermatoses. It exhibits strong bactericidal activity, primarily against Gram-positive bacteria. Rivanol disrupts DNA synthesis by intercalating between base pairs in the bacterial DNA helix. Its antibacterial effect depends on this disruption of DNA synthesis. According to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur. 7), ethacridine monolactate is also a yellow crystalline powder. It must be protected from light. Rivanol should be stored in airtight containers between 15-30°C.
Contact of Rivanol with the eyes should be avoided; if powder or solution comes into contact with the eyes, they should be rinsed immediately with plenty of water. It is not known whether Rivanol is harmful to an unborn baby. Likewise, it is unclear whether Rivanol passes into breast milk or whether it would harm a nursing infant.
Aethanolum-Alcoholum-Ethanolum-Spiritus vini: In ancient times, it was referred to as “water of life” and was practically believed to be a cure for almost every illness. An important feature of alcohol is that it is an excellent solvent frequently used in most pharmaceutical formulations. Although Ethyl Alcohol is active at concentrations of 60-90%, a 70% concentration (vol/vol) exhibits optimal efficacy for skin antisepsis. Conversely, when the concentration drops below 50%, it largely loses its activity.
Alcohol exerts its effect by coagulating proteins and dissolving lipids. Since protein denaturation requires the presence of some water, the antimicrobial effect of absolute (96%) alcohol is weak.
In this formula, let us remember that liquoris aluminii acetici is Burow’s solution.
ALUMINUM ACETATE SOLUTION (USP 27)

SOLUTIO ALUMINII ACETATIS (BUROW’S SOLUTION)
Aluminum subacetate solution 545 ml
Glacial acetic acid 15 ml
Purified water q.s. 1000 ml
Preparation
The required amount of the Aluminum Subacetate solution, whose preparation we described in the first formula, is placed into an Erlenmeyer flask. Glacial Acetic Acid is added to it, shaken, and brought to the desired volume with the required amount of water. It is mixed and filtered if necessary.
It is poured into its bottle, properly labeled, and dispensed. It is an antiseptic and astringent. It is used externally for malodorous wounds. It must be freshly prepared. It can be stored for 7 days.
Preparation of the formula
After boiling and cooling the calculated amount of distilled water specified in the formula, rivanol is dissolved in the water and alcohol is added. Then, Burow’s solution is added to finalize the preparation. It should not be forgotten that the formula is to be completed to 100 g with distilled water. The preparation must be freshly prepared and protected from heat and light.
