Gentian violet – Gentian violet – Methyl violet – Hexamethyl pararosaniline chloride
Used as an antiseptic at a dose of 0.06 g in cases of (stomatitis, oral conditions, eczema, folliculitis, trichophytosis, vulvovaginitis, anthelmintic, clonorchis sinensis), this dye substance is also used in dyeing silk, cotton, and paper. In microscopy, it is also used for staining bacteria and in leukocyte counting.
Its 0.5% or 1% aqueous solutions, or 1.2% or 1.6% creams, are used for the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. Since it has been shown to have carcinogenic effects in animals, it should not be applied to wounded or ulcerated skin areas. Gentian violet occurs as dark green or greenish, shiny crystals with a metallic luster; it is odorless or has a very faint odor. It is sparingly soluble in water, soluble 1:10 in alcohol and 1:15 in glycerol, soluble in chloroform, and practically insoluble in ether. Aqueous solutions more concentrated than 0.5% can be prepared with the addition of alcohol, but such concentrated solutions are not suitable for application to mucous membranes. Gentian Violet Cream (Gentian Violet Cream, USP 23), described in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 40°C. Also according to USP, Gentian Violet Topical Solution (Gentian Violet Topical Solution USP 23) must be stored in airtight containers.Formulation examples in the Spanish medical formulary
