Alcoholic soap solution / Soap Solution alcoholic / Spirit shampooDear colleagues; We know that maintaining hand hygiene is one of the most effective methods for protecting against the Coronavirus, and the common method recommended by many experts is washing hands with soap and water. In this article, I will share with you a formula found in Australian medical formularies.Formula:
Rp.
Thymol 0.5%
Soft soap 50 g
Ethanol 90% ad. 100 ml
Ingredients in the formula:
Thymol- Thymol- Timolo [FU]- isopropylmetacresolThymol occurs as colorless, often large crystals or crystalline powder with a pungent thyme odor. According to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), its melting point is between 48-52°C. Its solubilities according to BP: Very slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol and ether; freely soluble in essential and fixed oils; slightly soluble in glycerol; soluble in dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides.
Thymol is a phenolic antiseptic with antibacterial and antifungal activity. Although more potent than phenol, its use is limited due to its low water solubility, greater irritancy, and sensitivity to proteins. Thymol is used as a deodorant in mouthwashes and gargles. Furthermore, due to its counter-irritant and antiseptic properties, it is also useful topically in certain skin conditions. Thymol iodide is also utilized in the treatment of skin diseases. Thymol is combined with other volatile substances in the composition of preparations used for colds, coughs, and various respiratory tract disorders. Thymol exerts its antiseptic and disinfectant action by increasing the permeability of the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria and fungi, thereby exerting bactericidal and fungicidal effects.Soft soap:Liquid or easily soluble soap, usually made by saponifying with potassium rather than the more typical sodium hydroxide. Softsoap is a commercial brand name for liquid soap products.Ethanol- Ethyl alcohol- Ethanol [ASK; BP; FP; IUPAC]:Alcohol is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and water. In the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), alcohol is referred to as “Ethanol (96 per cent)” and is defined as not less than 96.0% and not more than 96.6% v/v. It is a clear, colourless, mobile liquid with a characteristic odour and a burning taste; it is volatile and ignites readily, burning with a smokeless blue flame. It is miscible with water; during mixing, the temperature of the mixture rises and the volume decreases. It is miscible with chloroform, ether, glycerol, and most other organic solvents.
Although there are different types of alcohol with microbicidal effects against microorganisms, ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol are commonly used for this purpose. Antimicrobial agents are classified differently according to the environments in which they act. Alcohols are effective against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. However, they do not have a lasting effect on bacterial spores, which are highly resistant to harsh conditions. That is, while having a lethal effect on vegetative microorganisms, they cannot destroy bacterial spores that allow bacteria to reproduce.
Alcohols act by damaging the cell membrane and denaturing protein structures. Proteins are found in all living organisms and play essential roles in the processes required to sustain life. Proteins are complex macromolecules. Changes occurring in their structure can cause proteins to lose their function. Ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol break the hydrogen bonds in protein structures, forming new hydrogen bonds between the protein and alcohol molecules. Consequently, the protein structure is altered. When the alcohol concentration drops below 50% by volume, the microbicidal efficacy of alcohols drops significantly. Although it varies depending on the type of microorganism, 60%–90% is the optimal range.Preparation of the formula:After dissolving the calculated amount of thymol in alcohol, it is mixed with soft soap using a glass rod and brought to the desired volume with ethanol.
If the formula is prepared with 5% coal tar solution instead of thymol, it can also be used as a shampoo for conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
