Dear colleagues, for this week’s formula, I would like to write about a preparation with a fairly wide range of uses, originally known as GLYCERINUM TANNATUM COMPOSITUM.
Rp Pantocaini …………………… 0.1 g
Acidi tannici …………………. 2.0 g
Glycerini ………………..ad 20.0 g
Pantocaine, used for local anesthetic purposes in this formula, is a long-acting local anesthetic also known as tetracaine. It is the most toxic among local anesthetics.
Tannic acid is used in medicine for tonsillitis, pharyngitis, hemorrhoids, and certain skin conditions due to its astringent effects on blood vessels and mucous membranes.
Its most important source is the Aleppo oak (gall oak). Tannins, which are also abundantly found in acorns, are antiseptic compounds as well. Tannic acid is extracted into water by infusing the plant with hot water (like brewing tea). After this, the solution is subjected to evaporation to obtain tannin (or tannic acid) in solid form.
Synthetic tannic acids are found in various preparations used in the treatment of eczema.
Glycerin is used as a vehicle in this formula; its color darkens when mixed with tannin.
Indications for the formula:
ULCUS CRURIS (VARICOSE ULCER): Mostly occurs on the ankle and the anterior aspect of the leg. Venous pressure increases in and below the varicose area; consequently, because sufficient fresh blood does not pass through the capillaries supplying the skin, it becomes malnourished and wounds open even with minor trauma. Since the high pressure persists, the resulting wounds heal with great difficulty despite all treatments. Sometimes, wounds can also open without any trauma. Treatment is lengthy; first, the varicose veins are treated to lower regional pressure, thereby normalizing the blood supply to the wound site. Once its nutrition is restored, the healing process begins in the wound and wound care is continued.
Used for BURNS and SKIN CHAPS / CRACKS.
It is an effective formula for FRICTION BLISTERS ON THE FEET (bullae caused by shoe rubbing) and BLISTERING (fluid retention) cases.
