Phytotherapy and Herbal Teas – 2

İçindekiler

Dear Colleagues;

IT SHOULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN THAT….. IN TURKEY, WE PHARMACISTS ARE THE ONLY HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN PHYTOTHERAPY…

In the article I wrote last week, I mentioned Phytotherapy and highlighted that the Pharmacist is an Herbal Treatment Specialist. This week, by providing examples of herbal teas and formulations prepared from medicinal drugs, I would like to remind everyone that the importance of Phytotherapy should be recognized in our country just as it is in developed countries like Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy, and that it must be delivered to patients under the supervision of a Pharmacist.

If we recall some useful general information regarding teas:

Teas are generally taken on an empty stomach in the morning or before going to bed.

Laxative teas and sedative teas are drunk at night.

Digestive teas are taken immediately after meals or when needed.

Diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) teas (linden, elderflower) are taken while the patient is in bed. They are ineffective in the morning.

Diuretic teas are drunk in the morning.

Appetite-stimulating teas, on the other hand, are taken 30 minutes before meals.

PREVENTIVE WINTER TEA

Linden (Fl.Tiliae)               10 parts

Elderflower (Fl.Sambuci)  10 parts

Lemon balm (Fr.Melissae)   10 parts

Rosehip (Fr.Rosa caninae) 10 parts

Hibiscus flower (Fl.Hibisci)        5 parts

Fennel fruit (Fr.Foeniculi) 5 parts

This is an example formula to be drunk among the family in the evenings during winter months.

SLEEP DISORDER

Valerian root (Radix Valeriane) 15 parts

Lemon blossom (Flos Citri)           15 parts

Lemon balm leaf (Folia Melissae) 15 parts

Hops (Lupuli Strobuli) 15 parts

1 part = 1 g

It is dispensed to the patient in 12 individual 5 g packets. 250 ml of hot water is poured over 5 g of the mixture, infused with the lid covered, strained, and drunk before bedtime. Indication: It is effective as a nerve calming agent and for insomnia.

IN MILD DEPRESSION

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perfaratum) is used in combination with hops (Humulus lupulus).

It is not toxic; it should not be taken together with CNS depressants and alcohol. It is non-addictive and does not cause drowsiness. It is used 4 times a day for 2–3 weeks.

FOR THOSE WHO DO SPORTS

Hawthorn flower (Crataegi folium)         15 parts

Rosemary leaf (Rosmarini Folium) 15 parts

Yarrow (Millefolii herba)    15 parts

It strengthens the heart and eliminates feelings of exhaustion.

CARDIOVASCULAR INSUFFICIENCY

Crataegus (Hawthorn flowers) Hawthorn

It strengthens the heart muscles, regulates heartbeat, and lowers blood pressure. 900 mg extract/day should be used for at least 6 weeks. 1 teaspoon of the flower and leaf mixture is used 3 times a day.

IN RESPIRATORY TRACT DISORDERS

Flos Malvae       40 parts

Radix Primulae  20 parts

Folium Melissae 20 parts

Flos Crataegi      20 parts

2 dessertspoons of the tea mixture are added to 150 ml of boiling water and infused. Indication: It is an expectorant in asthma and chronic bronchitis. It is especially recommended for the elderly and individuals with a fatigued heart. Radix Primulae acts as an expectorant and soothing agent due to the saponosides it contains. Flos Malvae is a pectoral demulcent and coloring agent due to its mucilage. Folium Melissae is both aromatic and calming. Flos Crataegi is soothing to the aging heart.

PREPARING SKIN TONIC

Folia Urticae infusion 50 ml

Herba Thymi infusion 50 ml

Apple cider vinegar                       6 ml

Mixed and applied topically as a tonic to clean skin. Recommended for oily skin.

Apple cider vinegar preparation: Peel 1 kg of apples. Squeeze the juice with a press (approx. 400 ml), add 5 dessertspoons of granulated sugar, 40 ml of homemade vinegar as a starter culture, and 100 ml of water. Cover with a cheesecloth and let it sit for 3 weeks in a dark, moderately cool place away from sunlight, stirring occasionally. At the end of this period, the vinegar strained through the cheesecloth is ready for use.

Dear Colleagues, while wishing a Happy March 8th International Women’s Day to all women in our country and across the world, I will certainly not forget our female colleagues. Happy International Women’s Day to all our hardworking, dedicated, and humble female pharmacist healthcare workers who, while providing uninterrupted healthcare services with countless difficulties, have to raise their children in their pharmacies, who cannot employ technicians in worsening pharmacy economies and thus have to work all alone in their pharmacies, who do not have the luxury of taking a vacation or even the right to get sick, who work all day devoting time and effort for every single patient according to the prescriptions brought to their pharmacies, who simultaneously serve as the neighborhood’s healthcare advisors, yet in return can barely make a living and at their passing can only leave a pharmacy license as an inheritance to their widowed spouses and orphaned children…

Wishing you a good week…
