EAU DE GOULARD for burns, cracks, and sprains

This week, I would like to write about a preparation that we all frequently prepare in our laboratories and about whose preparation we are most confused.

This preparation, whose synonyms I have listed above, was first used by a person named Thomas Goulard and is known by his name.

Briefly, the preparation of the formula is done by weighing and mixing the ingredients.

Eau de goulard; is used as a dressing solution due to its astringent properties in various burns, cracks, sprains, and bruises. It is a liquid magistral preparation that provides relief when applied to the skin as a compress for about 20 minutes 3-4 times a day in weeping allergic skin diseases, soft tissue infections, and in cases of bruising, swelling, and pain observed as a result of medication extravasation into surrounding tissue, especially after injections.

 

To give an example calculation;

If we are asked to prepare 125 g of EAU DE GOULARD;

Since 100 g of preparation is obtained when working according to the formula above, the amount of ingredients to be taken for the 125 g requested in the prescription would be:

lead subacetate solution: 2*125/ 100 = 2.5 g

water ……………………………..: 98*125/ 100 = 122.5 g.

Dear colleagues, if you notice, I specifically tried not to use a distinguishing word such as tap water or distilled water regarding the water used in this formula. The differing views of our professors at the faculties where we studied do not make it possible for us to agree on the quality of the water used in this formula.

Regarding the preparation of this preparation, which is known as the only formula that uses tap water, look at what our professor Prof. Dr. Enver İzgü, author of the book GALENICAL AND INDUSTRIAL PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGY I (ANKARA UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF PHARMACY PUBLICATIONS), said:

“Freshly boiled and cooled distilled water must definitely be used in the preparation of this solution, otherwise it becomes cloudy. The French make it with ordinary water and it turns into a white solution, which is why they called it white water, but IT IS AN INCORRECT PREPARATION.(page 110)

Another esteemed professor of ours, Prof. Dr. Kasım Cemal Güven from Istanbul University Faculty of Pharmacy, wrote the formula with a more cautious language in his book Medical Formulas (1979 page 233), stating: “It is a clear or slightly cloudy liquid” , by which I think he indicated in a sense that both preparation methods could be accepted…

Indeed, if you prepare this formula with boiled and cooled distilled water, you will obtain a clear solution, and if you prepare it with tap water, you will obtain a cloudy preparation. Of course, here it does not seem quite possible for us to compare the water flowing from taps in France with the water flowing from our taps in our country in terms of quality and hygiene.
