SILVER NITRATE SOLUTION-SOLUTIO ARGENTI NITRATIS-SOLUTION DE NITRATE D’ARGENTDear Colleagues, this week we will examine together a formulation prescribed as a compress in short-term, small-surface local applications due to its astringent and caustic properties. This formulation has been translated from laboratory lecture notes prepared for students receiving pharmacy education in France.

Ingredients in the formula
Silver nitrate- silver nitrate- silbernitrat –nitrate d’argent:Silver nitrate is transparent crystals or an odorless crystalline powder. In the presence of organic material, it darkens under the effect of light, turning into a gray or grayish-black color. It is soluble in 0.5 parts of water and 14 parts of alcohol. While its solubility increases in boiling water or alcohol, it is slightly soluble in ether and glycerin. The pH of its aqueous solution is approximately 5.5. Silver nitrate is an antiseptic agent with germicidal activity on the skin and mucous membranes. It is routinely instilled into the eyes of newborns as a 1% solution to prevent conjunctivitis caused by gonococci and other bacteria that can be transmitted from the birth canal (gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum or neonatal conjunctivitis). Its 0.5% solutions are used applied on gauze dressings in the treatment of extensive burns. Additionally, a 0.01% silver nitrate solution can be used for irrigation of the bladder and other body cavities. It has also been used against impetigo, warts, and decubitus ulcers. On the other hand, silver nitrate can also be regarded as a topical cauterizing agent. It is beneficial in the treatment of excessive granulation in painless wounds, refreshing the edges of ulcers and fissures, and eradicating the base of vesicular, bullous, or aphthous lesions. Silver nitrate exerts its germicidal effect by disrupting the tertiary structures of enzymes and other proteins present in bacterial cells. Silver nitrate is used topically. It is also applied to the eye as a 1% solution. It is used in the prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum and the treatment of decubitus ulcers, impetigo, and warts (flat warts).
M.D. 0.03-1g Incompatible with alkalis and alkali carbonates, chlorides, bromides, iodides, cyanides, sulfates, phosphates, tartaric acid, and organic substances. While leaving a stain called a silver stain on the skin, 10 g is lethal. In case of poisoning, the stomach is lavaged with sodium chloride solution.
A laxative is administered. Morphine is applied.Preparation of the formulaHalf of the distilled water to be used in the formula, previously brought to a brief boil, is placed into a tared bottle. Silver nitrate is added and dissolved with simple stirring. The formula is then made up to 100 g with the remaining distilled water.
This solution can be prepared in various concentrations for the treatment of gonorrhea and conjunctivitis, as well as for sore throats, mucosal lesions, warts, and ulcerated wounds due to its astringent, antiseptic, and corrosive (caustic) effects.
It should be stored protected from light in amber (colored) bottles.
