Dear colleagues,This week,ALUMINUM SUBACETATE SOLUTION, and a frequently prescribed formula in which this solution is used, briefly known asBurow’s, I would like to write about.
As I begin my article, I would like to remind you that although Aluminum subacetate solution is always available as a ready-made solution, preparing it under the current laboratory conditions in our pharmacies is quite difficult.This formula and its preparation are as follows;
ALUMINUM SUBACETATE SOLUTION (USP 27)
ALUMINUM SUBACETATE TOPICAL SOLUTION
Aluminum Sulfate 145 g
Acetic Acid 160 ml
Calcium Carbonate 70 g
Purified Water q.s. 1000 ml
Preparation Aluminum sulfate is dissolved in 600 ml of cold water, the solution is filtered, and calcium carbonate is added to it (in several portions while stirring). Then, acetic acid is added gradually, stirred, and this mixture is left to stand for 24 hours. If necessary, the solution is filtered using a vacuum.
The residue remaining in the Büchner funnel is washed by gradually adding water and made up to 1000 ml in a graduated cylinder. This solution is frequently used in hemorrhoid ointments. It has an antiperspirant (sweat secretion inhibiting) effect and is also used as a drying agent and deodorant.

ALUMINUM ACETATE SOLUTION (USP 27)
ALUMINUM ACETATE TOPICAL SOLUTION
SOLUTIO ALUMINI ACETATIS (BUROW’S SOLUTION)
Aluminum subacetate solution 545 ml
Glacial acetic acid 15 ml
Purified water q.s. 1000 ml
Preparation The required amount of the Aluminum Subacetate solution described in the first formula is placed into an Erlenmeyer flask.
Glacial Acetic Acid is added to it, shaken, and made up to the desired volume with the required amount of water. It is stirred and filtered if necessary.
It is placed in its bottle, properly labeled, and dispensed. It is antiseptic and astringent. It is used externally on malodorous wounds.
