Ingredients in the formula
Menthol-levomenthol-Peppermint camphor-2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanol:It is a powder with a characteristic odor and taste, free-flowing or agglomerated in masses of crystals. It can also be found as colorless, prismatic, or needle-like shiny crystals. Its melting point is approximately 34°C. According to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), menthol is practically insoluble in water; very soluble in alcohol, ether, and petroleum ether; freely soluble in fixed oils and liquid paraffin; very slightly soluble in glycerol. The estimated acceptable daily intake of menthol has been reported as 200 µg/kg body weight. It is an antiseptic substance that produces a sensation of cold when applied to the skin, exhibits a mild analgesic effect, and is used against urticaria due to this property. It dilates blood vessels on the skin, creating a cooling sensation and exerting an analgesic effect.Eucalyptus oil-Aetheroleum eucalypti-Oleum Eucalypti :eucalyptus oil is very slightly soluble in water; soluble 1:5 in alcohol (70%); miscible with alcohol (90%), dehydrated alcohol, oils, and paraffin. Eucalyptus oil has a characteristic camphoraceous odor; it leaves a cooling, camphor-like taste in the mouth. It must not contain less than 70% w/w cineole (eucalyptol). It is soluble in alcohol (70%) at a 1:5 ratio. It must be stored at room temperature below 25°C and in airtight containers. Its refractive index n2D0 is between 1.535 and 1.538 (Merck Index 13). Its density d2255 is 1.184; the density of its natural ester is approximately 1.180. In addition to natural sources, it is also produced synthetically starting from salicylic acid and methyl alcohol. It is widely used as a counterirritant in analgesic preparations due to its irritant effect on the skin. Its primary indications are musculoskeletal, joint, and soft tissue injuries, and chilblains (perniosis). It is also used by inhalation in the symptomatic treatment of upper respiratory tract diseases. It can be defined as a safe and effective drug sold over-the-counter in most countries. Because it has a pleasant taste and odor, it is also used at low concentrations (0.04%) as a flavoring agent in orally administered preparations; it is included in the composition of candies, cough lozenges, chewing gums, toothpastes, and mouthwashes. It is also used in the preparation of some formulations used for the treatment of hemorrhoids. Ingestion in large amounts is harmful due to its high salicylate content. It is rapidly absorbed through intact skin and exhibits effects characteristic of systemically administered salicylates. The exact mechanism of action of methyl salicylate is unknown. When applied topically to the skin, it causes redness and irritation at the application site, which is followed by its analgesic effect. It is immediately absorbed through intact skin and can exhibit effects characteristic of systemically administered salicylates. Methyl salicylate is rapidly absorbed from the site where it is applied to the skin.Peanut oil – Peanut Oil – oleum arachis :According to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph Eur. 7), refined peanut oil (Arachis Oil, Refined; Arachis Oil BP2012) is obtained from shelled peanut seeds. A suitable antioxidant may be added. It is a clear, yellowish viscous liquid consisting mainly of glycerides of oleic and linoleic acids, and a small amount of other acids. It solidifies at approximately 20 °C. It is very slightly soluble in alcohol; miscible with petroleum ether. It should be stored in well-filled containers. It should be protected from light.Preparation of the formula :The calculated amount of menthol is crushed in a glass mortar and dissolved in peanut oil. With the addition of methyl salicylate and finally eucalyptus oil, the total volume is completed to 100 ml with peanut oil.
