Dear colleagues; Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is an inflammatory and (usually) allergic skin disease that often occurs when the skin becomes sensitized as a result of contact with many substances, or under the influence of various genetic and environmental factors.
In the article I will publish this week, I will share with you a formula frequently encountered in our pharmacies. In calculating this formula, we must pay particular attention to the amount of Aluminum subacetate.
Rp.
Aluminum subacetate 1 g
Anhydrous lanolin 40 g
Distilled water 40 g
Vaseline 24 g
Substances included in the formula;
Aluminum subacetate- Basic aluminum acetate- Sous-acetate d’aluminium- Aluminum diacetate- Hydroxoaluminium diacetate;
Aluminum subacetate (basic aluminum acetate) is an astringent substance used topically. It is generally included in the composition of ointments used against hemorrhoids. It has also been used as an antiperspirant. Topically, it is used to provide temporary relief in minor skin irritations. For example, it helps relieve itching in insect bites, athlete’s foot, conditions resulting from contact with poison ivy, and skin rashes caused by contact with detergents, cosmetics, or chemicals. It has a cooling and drying effect; it is also used topically especially to relieve swelling and trauma resulting from minor bruises. Aluminum acetate preparations are also used topically via wet dressing applications in skin-related conditions such as eczema, diaper rash, heat rash, acne, and pruritus.
Lanoline- Graisse de laine- Adeps lanae- Refined wool fat- Lanae cera- Lanoleine T.K.;
It is obtained from sheep’s wool. It is pale yellow in color and has an ointment consistency. It dissolves in ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and boiling absolute alcohol. It absorbs twice its weight in water. It is an emulsifier. It forms a water/oil emulsion. In its anhydrous state, its consistency is quite firm. With the addition of water, a doughy texture is formed. It absorbs water equal to its weight. It is easily absorbed by the skin and is odorless. It is used as a vehicle (base).
The vehicle defined under the name lanolinum by the T.K. (Turkish Pharmacopoeia) contains 13 parts lanolin, 3 parts liquid paraffin, and 4 parts water.
Vaseline- Vaseline blanche;
Known as white vaseline (white petroleum jelly), it is an ointment base with emollient properties. It is not easily absorbed by the skin. It is obtained by bleaching yellow vaseline. It is odorless and tasteless.
Preparation of the formula;
The amount of aluminum subacetate must be prepared by taking it from an 8.5% solution. In order to obtain 1 g, 11.76 g must be weighed from the solution. All liquids are gradually added to the anhydrous lanolin and mixed. Vaseline is added onto this mixture.
Wishing you a good week…
