Dear colleagues, I would like to emphasize that there are important points to consider in this week’s formula that I am sharing with you.
I am conveying this formulation exactly as it is prepared by pharmacy students in France during their laboratory training.
First of all, this preparation, which is requested to be prepared as 1% iodized alcohol (alcool iodé) in grams, can be prepared up to concentrations of 10%. Furthermore, the alcohol strength used in the solution can be prepared at various concentrations ranging from 60% to 90%.
Substances included in the formula:
Iode- jodum- iodum-Iode T.K.: Iodine is found in the form of brittle flakes or small crystals with a pungent, sharp odor, metallic appearance, and a violet grayish-purple or grayish-black color. Solubility according to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP): Soluble in alcohol and chloroform; slowly soluble in glycerol. Solubility according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): Soluble 1:3000 in water, 1:13 in alcohol, 1:80 in glycerol; freely soluble in chloroform and ether; soluble in iodide solutions. It forms a caustic and irritating compound with acetone. Iodine exerts a strong bactericidal effect. It is effective against fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores. Iodine exhibits a lethal effect on all types of microorganisms, including viruses, and spores, even at low concentrations. When applied to the skin, iodine is absorbed slowly. It should not be applied to edematous skin.
ALCOHOL- ETHANOLUM DILUTUM-DILUTED ETHANOL
Diluted Ethanol is a mixture of ethyl alcohol and water. It should contain not less than 69.1% v/v and not more than 71.0% v/v, and not less than 61.5% w/w and not more than 63.5% w/w of C2H6O.
Although Ethyl Alcohol is effective at concentrations of 60–90%, a 70% concentration (vol/vol) shows optimal efficacy for skin antisepsis. Conversely, when the concentration drops below 50%, it largely loses its activity.
Preparation of the Formula – Modus Operandi
The iodine weighed on a watch glass is finely powdered in a glass mortar. The iodine is dissolved with the calculated amount of alcohol. To prevent loss of substance, it is filtered through filter paper pre-moistened with alcohol. The use of metal should be avoided during the preparation of the formulation.
It should be stored away from heat and light in an amber glass bottle with a red label and a “not for internal use” warning.
It is used for antiseptic purposes.
