Dear Colleagues,
This week,in hyperacidity, gastric complaints such as gastritis and duodenal ulcer, and with a mild laxativeeffect, I will share with you a stomach powder formula.Rp.
Bismuti subnitrici
Rhizomatis Rhei pulv………/ a.a 5.0 g
Natrii bicarbonici ……… 20.0 g
Bismuth subnitrate, Sous nitrate de bismuth T.K.:It is a white, microcrystalline powder. Insoluble in water and alcohol, soluble in hydrochloric and nitric acids. Incompatible with carbonates and bicarbonates, iodides, and tannins. It is more astringent than other bismuth salts. It is used in place of bismuth carbonate, but may cause nitrite poisoning. It also possesses adsorbent and antiseptic properties. It is used in gastric and intestinal ulcers, and in diarrhea. In these cases, the daily dose ranges between 10-20 g. While bismuth subnitrate is used orally as an intestinal astringent, it is used externally and topically on the skin (creams, wound powders, etc.) for its mild astringent and antiseptic effects in ulcerations, dermatoses (erythema, herpes, herpes zoster), and in cases of allergic rhinitis and nasal mucosal edema.
Extractum rhei rhubarb extract, Extractum rhei siccum: The underground roots and rhizomes of the Rheum plant are called rhizoma rhei. Rhubarb extract is obtained from the dried underground parts, cleared of root, tips, and bark, of Rheum palmatum or R. officinale (Polygonaceae) plants, or of hybrids or mixtures of these species. It contains anthraquinone laxative substances and is used in the treatment of constipation.Sodium bicarbonate, Sal de vichy sodium, Hydrogen carbonate, Bicarbonate de soude: Sodium bicarbonate is a white, odorless, crystalline powder. It dissolves in water in a 1:12 ratio; it is practically insoluble in alcohol. Sodium bicarbonate is an excipient used as a carbon dioxide source in the preparation of effervescent tablets and granules. It is an antacid. It is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, gastralgia, and enteritis. To neutralize stomach acidity, it is administered in high doses (2-8 g) 2-3 hours after meals.
Preparation and UseAfter mixing equal amounts of 5 grams each of bismuth subnitrate and Rhizoma rhei extract in a glass mortar, the preparation is completed with the addition of 20 g of sodium bicarbonate. When needed, one level dessert spoon is dissolved in a glass of water and ingested 3 times a day. Its effect is sharp and immediate. By providing temporary neutralization of stomach acid, it is used in conditions such as ulcers and gastritis as a mild laxative, stomachic, and soothing agent in hyperacidity.
