Iodinated Glycerite – GLYCERINE IODEE-GLYCERINUM CUM IODODear Colleagues, this week we will examine a formula used for antiseptic purposes together. This formulation is also frequently used as a direct application/swab (topical application to tonsil tissue) in tonsillitis and for antiseptic purposes in veterinary medicine.

PreparationThe ethanol specified in the formula is 90%. When preparing the preparation, 96% ethanol is used. To dilute 96% ethanol to 90%, the required amounts of 96% ethanol and water are calculated and weighed. Meanwhile, iodine (weighed on a watch glass) and potassium iodide are thoroughly triturated together in a glass mortar and dissolved in the calculated amount of water for the formula. 96% ethanol is added to it gradually.
This preparation must contain 6.8–7% (w/w) potassium iodide.Glycerol – Glycerine – Glycerol – 85%;Glycerin is a clear, colorless or very pale, hygroscopic, syrupy liquid that is odorless or has a very faint odor, and has a sweet taste. It is miscible with water and alcohol; slightly soluble in acetone; practically insoluble in chloroform, ether, fixed oils, and essential oils. Its aqueous solutions show a neutral reaction to litmus. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the pH of Glycerin Oral Solution, USP is between 5.5 and 7.5. Strong oxidizing agents form explosive mixtures with glycerin.Preparation of the formulaThe formula is completed by adding the calculated amount of glycerin onto the prepared tincture of iodine.
It should be protected from heat and light in a dark-colored glass bottle.
