Over the next four weeks, I will be publishing formulas that we can use for scalp disorders.
This week’s first formula:
I would like to talk about a formula we can use in the treatment of RINGWORM OF THE SCALP (TINEA CAPITIS).
As I begin writing the formula, I would like to remind you that CRINALIS means hair in Latin, and SPIRITUS means alcohol (spirit).
SPIRITUS CRINALIS I
Rp. Acidi salicylici ………………. 2.0 g
Spiritus camphorati ……….. 10.0 g
Spiritus diluti …………ad 100.0 g
The salicylic acid in this formula is used in many scalp conditions such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and dandruff. It was particularly chosen in this formula for its efficacy in the treatment of ringworm (TINEA CAPITIS).
TINEA CAPITIS is a fungal infection of the scalp commonly seen in children aged 3–5 years, more frequently in boys. Although it is rare in adults and more common in preschool children, it heals spontaneously at puberty. Broken and lifeless hairs along with fine scaling are the primary findings. If inflammatory changes are added to these findings, it results in permanent alopecia. Tinea capitis is contagious and can cause epidemics. Characteristic black dots caused by broken hairs are seen in the affected areas.
Looking at the Spiritus camphorati included in the formula:
SPIRITUS CAMPHORATUS – TINCTURA CAMPHORAE – TEINTURE DE CAMPHRE (T.K)
Camphor ………………. 1 g
Alcohol (90%) …….. 9 g
In this formula, camphor tincture is used as a counterirritant, that is, to accelerate blood circulation by mildly irritating the application area.
SPIRITUS DILUTUS; it is clear that diluted alcohol refers to 70% ethanol.
Preparation and storage:
The salicylic acid weighed on a watch glass is ground in a glass mortar, dissolved with a small amount of dilute alcohol, mixed with the prepared camphor tincture, and made up to 100 g with the remaining dilute alcohol. The solution filtered through filter paper should be stored below 30 degrees at room temperature in tightly closed airtight containers protected from light.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Apply friction to the affected area of the scalp in circular motions morning and evening using a cotton pad until the area becomes slightly reddened. It should be kept in mind that hair follicles can be damaged by excessive rubbing.
