Dexpanthenol and Accessories – 2

Dear colleagues, I will continue the second part of the formulations containing dexpanthenol, the first part of which I wrote last week, with two preparations included in the German standard formulary.

Our first formula is a preparation in hydrophilic form. Hydrophilic means water-loving, water-soluble structure. Groups such as -OH, -SO3H, -COOH, and -NH2 are hydrophilic groups. Compounds containing these groups in their structure dissolve in water.

Formula of Basiscreme DAC, a hydrophilic base;

DAC is the abbreviation for the German Pharmaceutical Codex (Deutscher Arzneimittel-Codex). In other words, it refers to the basic hydrophilic cream included in the German Pharmaceutical Codex.

Dear Colleagues, I have presented the formula with the synonyms as they appear in the German Pharmaceutical Codex. You can easily obtain the excipient base substances in this formula from the relevant suppliers. While reminding you that in German, WeiBes Vaselin is White Vaseline (white petrolatum) and Gereinigtes Wasser is Purified Water, I would like to highlight Mittelkettige Triglceride in this formula. Mittelkettige Triglyceride, referred to as medium-chain triglycerides in German, is a white fatty mass obtained by cold pressing the dry solid parts of the fruits of the plant C0CUS NUCIFERA L. (PALMAE), which we all know very well. I think we will recall it better if I say that this oil, which is a source of medium-chain triglycerides, is called COCONUT OIL. Known as a pleasant-smelling natural cosmetic product, coconut oil is known to be used topically primarily for hair loss, as well as for numerous skin problems (eczema, psoriasis, skin lesions and scars, dermatitis, etc.).

Basic cream is an important hydrophilic base that can also be safely used during pregnancy and lactation.

Preparation of the basic cream

Glyceryl monostearate, cetyl alcohol, coconut oil (obtained by cold pressing), and white petrolatum (lipophilic mixture) are heated in a water bath set to approximately 60 degrees.

On the other hand, macrogol-20-glycerol monostearate, propylene glycol, and purified water are mixed and dissolved in a separate Erlenmeyer flask, again in a 60-degree water bath (hydrophilic mixture).

This prepared (hydrophilic) mixture is added to the initial (lipophilic) mixture while stirring at a constant speed and cooled down to 30 degrees.

Preparation of the formula

The calculated amount of citric acid is dissolved in boiled and cooled water. This solution, prepared as a preservative in the cream, is added to the previously prepared hydrophilic base cream, and then liquid dexpanthenol is added to finalize the formula.

The formula is applied to the skin 3 times a day for cicatrizant purposes and in the treatment of epithelial tissue damage; the preparation can be stored for 6 months.

Our other formula is lipophilic in nature. Lipophilic, as we recall, means having the ability to dissolve lipids, dissolve in them, or absorb them.

Ingredients in the formula;

Wollwachsalkoholsalbe –Lanolin-Graisse de laine-Adeps lanae-Refined wool fat-Lanae cera-Lanoleine T.K.

It is obtained from sheep’s wool (fleece). It is light yellow in color and has an ointment consistency. It is soluble in ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and boiling absolute alcohol. It does not dissolve in water. It absorbs twice its weight in water. It is an emulsifier. It forms a water-in-oil emulsion. In its anhydrous state, its consistency is quite stiff. Upon the addition of water, a pasty structure is formed. It absorbs water by its weight. It is easily absorbed by the skin and is odorless. It is used as a base. It can be added to other bases to increase their water-holding capacity. Its water-holding property originates from cholesterol and its derivatives, as well as aliphatic and triterpenic alcohols such as cetyl and lauryl alcohol contained in its structure.

The base defined under the name lanolinum by the T.K. (Turkish Pharmacopoeia) contains 13 parts Lanolin, 3 parts Liquid Paraffin, and 4 parts Water.

Preparation of the Formula

Citric acid is dissolved in boiled and cooled distilled water. This solution, prepared as a preservative, is incorporated into the lanolin softened in a warm water bath by stirring. The formula is finalized by adding coconut oil (Mittelkettige Triglyceride) and dexpanthenol.

The formula is applied to the skin 3 times a day for cicatrizant purposes and in the treatment of epithelial tissue damage; the preparation can be stored for 4 weeks.
