Dear colleagues; we will examine a formula that all of us can easily prepare in our pharmacy laboratories and which has a fairly wide range of uses.
Found in German medical formularies andsoft zinc oxide pastethis formula, called as such, is widely prescribed and used in subacute (between acute and chronic) and chronic dermatoses.
Substances in the formulaZinkoksid-zinci oxide-oxyde de zinc; it is an active ingredient with astringent properties, known for its weak antiseptic qualities. It is used in eczema, burns, diaper rash, and friction-induced skin damage. Zinc oxide ointment contains 20% zinc oxide, while zinc oxide paste contains 25%. Zinc oxide is not absorbed through the skin, and since it is insoluble in water, it is applied in the form of powder, ointment, or paste.Liquid parafin-oleum vaselini album-Huile de paraffine; known as liquid petrolatum (liquid paraffin), it is a transparent, colorless, and odorless viscous liquid. It is frequently used for its emollient properties. It is insoluble in water, glycerin, and alcohol.Vaseline-Vaseline blanche; known as white petrolatum (white soft paraffin), it is an ointment base with emollient properties. It is not easily absorbed through the skin. It is obtained by bleaching yellow petrolatum. It is odorless and tasteless.Cire blanche-Cera alba-Cire; known as white beeswax. It is obtained by bleaching the yellow beeswax harvested from the honeybee’s honeycombs. It is used as a thickening agent in creams and ointments.PreparationZinc oxide is levigated with liquid paraffin in a glass mortar. White petrolatum and beeswax are melted and stirred in a hot water bath not exceeding a maximum of 50 degrees until homogeneous. While the homogenized base cools to room temperature, the zinc oxide previously levigated with liquid paraffin in the mortar is added to complete the preparation.
This preparation, which has a considerably long shelf life when protected from air and light, is used in subacute and chronic dermatoses (skin diseases).
