Iodine occurs as brittle scales or small crystals with a sharp, pungent odor, metallic luster, and a violet grayish-purple or grayish-black color. Solubility according to the British Pharmacopoeia (BP): Soluble in alcohol and chloroform; slowly soluble in glycerol. Solubility according to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): Soluble in water at 1:3000, in alcohol at 1:13, in glycerol at 1:80; freely soluble in chloroform and ether; soluble in iodide solutions. It forms a pungent and irritating compound with acetone. Iodine exhibits a potent bactericidal effect. It is effective against fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores. Iodine exerts a lethal effect on all types of microorganisms, including viruses, and on spores even at low concentrations. When applied to the skin, iodine is absorbed slowly. It should not be applied to edematous skin.
White beeswax- Cera alba- Wax- Cera flava- Wachs- Cire T.K.;
It is obtained from honeycombs made by bees. Its melting point is 62-66°C. It is insoluble in water. It is partially soluble in alcohol and ether, and completely soluble in oils. It is soluble in chloroform, ether, warm carbon disulfide, fixed and volatile oils. It occurs as tasteless, white or slightly yellowish sheets or fine granules. White beeswax is obtained by bleaching yellow beeswax in sunlight. In addition to being used as a base for cerates, it is included in the composition of ointments and suppositories. When white beeswax is heated above 150°C, it undergoes esterification, its acid value decreases, and its melting point rises. It is incompatible with oxidizing agents.

Opium poppy or more commonly known as the poppy plant (Papaver somniferum L.) is an annual cultivated plant belonging to the Poppy family (Papaveraceae). It has glabrous, bluish-green leaves and white or purple flowers. It carries numerous stamens. Its capsule is approximately 5 cm in diameter and has a slightly flattened spherical shape at the top. There are two subspecies cultivated in Anatolia. The white latex flowing from incised unripe poppy capsules quickly darkens and solidifies. This gum, collected with special knives, is gathered and kneaded to obtain the Opium drug. This drug contains a 10-25% mixture of opium alkaloids. Among the alkaloids, the most important are morphine, codeine, noscapine, and papaverine. Mature capsules contain approximately 0.18-0.28% morphine. The seeds of the opium poppy plant do not contain alkaloids, but contain about 50-60% fixed oil. Since opium is an addictive drug, its unauthorized use is prohibited. In medicine, these substances are utilized as analgesics (pain relievers), anesthetics/narcotics, and antitussives (cough suppressants). Poppy seeds can be gray-blue, yellow, white, raw brown, and pink in color. The most widely cultivated poppies in Turkey are white, blue, and yellow-seeded varieties, respectively. A portion of the produced poppy seeds is reserved for farmers’ needs, while the remainder is traded on the open market. The most significant characteristic of poppy seed is that it contains 45–54% oil and 20–30% protein. The seeds are traditionally used in bread making and ground for pastries for food purposes. The oil obtained by pressing the seeds is also used in the food, cosmetic, and paint industries. Poppy seed oil rarely causes allergic reactions. For this reason, it is preferred, and it contains a high percentage of linoleic acid.

Lanolin is an ointment base. It is widely used in topical pharmaceutical formulations and cosmetic products. It is used in the preparation of water/oil type creams and ointments. When mixed with suitable vegetable oils or petrolatum, emollient creams that penetrate the skin are obtained. It mixes with water without phase separation and yields stable emulsions. Due to this property, it facilitates the absorption of medications. Lanolin mixes with approximately twice its weight of water without phase separation and yields stable emulsions. It is obtained from sheep’s wool. It is light yellow in color and has an ointment consistency. It is soluble in ether, petroleum ether, chloroform, and boiling absolute alcohol. It is an emulsifier. It forms water/oil emulsions. In anhydrous form, its consistency is quite firm. With the addition of water, a pasty consistency forms. It is readily absorbed by the skin and is odorless. It is used as a vehicle. According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), its melting range is between 38-44°C. The USP permits the addition of up to 200 ppm of a suitable antioxidant. 10 g of lanolin must be able to hold at least 20 ml of water. It is practically insoluble in water; slightly soluble in cold alcohol, freely soluble in boiling alcohol. It is readily soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, and petroleum ether. It may undergo slow auto-oxidation during storage. To prevent this, the addition of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is permitted. In case of prolonged heating, its color darkens and an unpleasant odor may develop.
The base defined as lanolinum by the Turkish Pharmacopoeia (T.K.) contains: 13 parts Lanolin, 3 parts Liquid paraffin, and 4 parts Water.
Preparation of the formula;
Poppy seed oil is placed into a capped Erlenmeyer flask. The calculated amount of finely powdered iodine is added to it and heated on a water bath at 50°C , shaking occasionally. Heating is continued until the brown color disappears (tested with starch paper). Meanwhile, white beeswax is melted within the lanolin and cooled to 40°C , after which the iodine solution in poppy seed oil is added, and the mixture is stirred until cold.
It is applied topically by rubbing for boils due to its antiseptic properties.
